Printemps Haussmann: Chic Shopping, Paris Views, and More

Printemps Haussmann: The Sophisticated Alternative to Galeries Lafayette

I visited Printemps Haussmann on the same day as its more famous neighbor, Galeries Lafayette. Since they are just steps apart on the iconic Boulevard Haussmann, it would be a missed opportunity not to see both. After exploring them, I discovered that Printemps has a unique character that sets it apart from other Parisian department stores.

Unlike a single monolithic building, Printemps is comprised of three interconnected buildings, each dedicated to a specific category: Men’s Fashion, Women’s Fashion, and Home & Lifestyle. This layout makes the shopping experience much more intuitive and less overwhelming than the labyrinthine feel of other massive malls. The interior architecture is stunning—featuring an Art Nouveau glass dome and intricate wrought iron that allows soft, natural light to filter in. It feels luxurious yet remains approachable and welcoming.

One area where Printemps edges out its competitors is its approachability. While it remains a high-end destination, the selection of premium and mid-range brands feels slightly more accessible and less high-pressure. A personal highlight is the massive beauty and cosmetics floor. It carries everything from niche artisanal brands to mainstream favorites, and the fragrance counter staff are exceptionally helpful, offering expert advice without making you feel obligated to buy.

However, the real "hidden gem" is the 7th-floor rooftop terrace. Access is completely free, offering a breathtaking panoramic view of Paris. It is one of the best spots in the city to photograph the Eiffel Tower, especially during the golden hour of the afternoon. Just beneath the glass dome on the upper floors, you’ll find a selection of restaurants. While they are a bit pricey, the experience of dining while overlooking the grand interior architecture is well worth it at least once.

If you are visiting during the Christmas season, Printemps is a must-see. The holiday window displays and interior decorations are among the most elaborate in Paris. Just be prepared for the crowds—Boulevard Haussmann becomes incredibly busy during December, and even walking on the sidewalk can be a challenge.

Essential Travel Tips:

  • Location: 64 Boulevard Haussmann. The nearest Metro station is Havre-Caumartin (shared with Galeries Lafayette).
  • VAT Refund: Non-EU residents can claim tax-free shopping benefits at the dedicated tax refund desks located within the building.
  • Culture: The Women’s building features a dedicated space for books and cultural items—a refreshing find in the middle of a fashion hub.
  • Service: The staff here are frequently praised for their professionalism, particularly in the beauty and fashion departments. You can browse comfortably without feeling monitored.

If you only have time for one department store, Galeries Lafayette is perhaps more famous for its sheer architectural scale. However, if you can spare an extra 45 minutes, Printemps is well worth the visit. The two stores complement each other perfectly, making for a complete Parisian shopping experience on Boulevard Haussmann.
