Printemps Haussmann: A Chic Shopping Experience with Paris Views

Printemps Haussmann: The Sophisticated Sibling of Galeries Lafayette

I visited Printemps during the same trip I took to Galeries Lafayette, as the two are just steps away from each other on Boulevard Haussmann. It would be a missed opportunity not to see both, and after exploring them, I realized that Printemps offers a distinct character that isn't immediately obvious to everyone.

Unlike a single monolithic building, Printemps is composed of three interconnected buildings, each specializing in its own category: menswear, womenswear, and home/lifestyle. This layout makes the shopping experience much more intuitive and less overwhelming than other massive department stores. The interior architecture is stunning, featuring Art Nouveau glass domes and intricate wrought iron. The soft light filtering through creates a luxurious atmosphere that remains approachable and welcoming.

In my opinion, Printemps feels slightly more accessible than Lafayette. While it is still a high-end destination, the selection of premium brands feels more varied and the shopping environment is lower-pressure. The massive cosmetics department on the lower level is a highlight, featuring everything from niche fragrance houses to mainstream giants. The staff at the perfume counters are exceptionally helpful and often provide expert consultations if you ask.

Panoramic Views and Dining

The feature most travelers rave about is the 7th-floor rooftop terrace. It is free to access and offers a spectacular panoramic view of Paris, including a perfect angle of the Eiffel Tower during the golden hour. Just beneath the glass dome on the upper floors, you will find several dining options. While the prices are on the higher side, dining with a view over the store's magnificent interior architecture is an experience worth trying at least once.

The holiday season is undoubtedly the most beautiful time to visit. The Christmas window displays and interior decorations are meticulously crafted, with many locals considering them the best in Paris. However, be warned: the crowds can be intense, and the sidewalks of Boulevard Haussmann often become completely packed with shoppers and tourists.

Essential Travel Tips

  • Location: 64 Boulevard Haussmann. The nearest metro station is Havre-Caumartin, the same stop used for Lafayette.
  • Tax Refunds: Non-EU residents can process VAT refunds directly at the dedicated counters within the building.
  • Culture Corner: The womenswear building surprisingly houses a dedicated space for books and culture—a peaceful retreat amidst the fashion floors.
  • Service: The customer service here is highly rated, particularly in the beauty and fashion sections. You can browse freely without feeling pressured by sales staff.

If you are pressed for time and can only choose one, Galeries Lafayette is perhaps more famous for its sheer grandeur. However, if you have an extra 45 minutes, Printemps is a must-visit. The two department stores complement each other perfectly to provide a complete Parisian shopping experience on Boulevard Haussmann.
