Printemps Haussmann: Shopping, Views, and Parisian Charm

Printemps Haussmann: The Sophisticated Neighbor of Galeries Lafayette

I visited Printemps during the same trip as Galeries Lafayette, as these two iconic department stores are just a few steps apart on Boulevard Haussmann. Skipping it would be a missed opportunity. After exploring both, I realized that Printemps offers a distinct experience that sets it apart from its more famous neighbor.

Unlike a single sprawling hall, Printemps is comprised of three interconnected buildings, each dedicated to a specific category: menswear, womenswear, and home/lifestyle. This layout makes the shopping experience far more intuitive and less overwhelming than other massive department stores. The interior architecture is stunning, featuring Art Nouveau glass domes and intricate wrought iron. The natural light creates a sophisticated yet welcoming atmosphere, making you feel comfortable the moment you walk in.

One area where Printemps edges out Lafayette is its accessibility. While still luxury-focused, the selection of mid-to-high-end brands feels slightly more approachable and less high-pressure. My personal highlight was the massive cosmetics and beauty department on the lower level. It carries everything from niche artisanal scents to mainstream global brands, and the staff at the fragrance counters are incredibly helpful, offering expert advice without being pushy.

The real showstopper, however, is the 7th-floor rooftop terrace. Entry is completely free, offering a breathtaking panoramic view of the Paris skyline. It is one of the best spots to photograph the Eiffel Tower, especially during the late afternoon. Just below the glass dome on the top floor, you’ll find a selection of restaurants. While it is a bit of a splurge, dining with a view of the grand interior architecture is an experience worth trying at least once.

If you visit during the holiday season, you are in for a treat. The Christmas window displays and interior decorations are world-class; many locals consider Printemps to have the most beautiful holiday decor in Paris. Be prepared for crowds, however, as Boulevard Haussmann becomes incredibly busy with shoppers and tourists during this time.

Essential Tips for Your Visit:

  • Address: 64 Boulevard Haussmann. It is served by the Havre-Caumartin Metro station, the same stop as Lafayette. Doors usually open at 10:00 AM.
  • VAT Refunds: Tax-free shopping is available for non-EU residents, with a dedicated tax refund desk located right inside the store.
  • Hidden Gem: The women’s building surprisingly houses a dedicated cultural and book section—a peaceful retreat in the middle of a fashion hub.
  • Service: The customer service here is highly regarded. You can browse the fashion and beauty sections freely without feeling like you're being constantly watched if you aren't ready to buy.

If you are short on time, Galeries Lafayette is perhaps more famous for its sheer architectural scale. However, if you can spare an extra 45 minutes, Printemps is absolutely worth the visit. The two stores complement each other perfectly, providing a complete and luxurious Parisian shopping experience on the legendary Boulevard Haussmann.
