The Straits: A Singaporean Culinary Gem in Saigon
I've tried quite a few Singaporean chicken rice places in Saigon, but rarely have I found one offering the complete trio of dipping sauces: chili sauce, dark soy sauce, and ginger like they do here.
A View and a Taste of Singapore
This restaurant, formerly known as Sky28, recently rebranded as The Straits, adopting a kitchen and bar concept. The stunning views from the 28th floor encompass the heart of Saigon.
What I appreciate most is that the menu showcases the best of Singaporean cuisine. Perhaps this is due to Keppel Land, the investor, originating from Singapore. They seem to view this as a way to promote their culinary culture. The flavors are undeniably authentic, crafted by a Singaporean chef, and surprisingly affordable for a 5-star hotel setting with panoramic Saigon views. Expect to spend around 300k - 400k per person for a satisfying meal, with even cheaper lunch options starting from 220k per person.
Must-Try Dishes at The Straits
- Hainanese Chicken Rice: A Singaporean classic done right.
- Laksa: Fragrant curry laksa with a hint of coconut milk.
- Nasi Lemak: The iconic Malaysian coconut rice dish.
- Rojak: A unique Singaporean/Malaysian salad featuring fried dough sticks tossed in shrimp paste.
- Hor Fun: Similar to fried rice noodles.
Verdict: Delicious, Affordable, and Authentic
Overall, The Straits is a true "delicious-value" option for Singaporean cuisine lovers. It's even more affordable than some mid-range Singaporean eateries in Saigon, yet the experience is far superior!
