My Biggest Mistake in Europe? Not Enough Lake Como!
Waking up in bustling Milan, I craved an escape. A spontaneous decision led me to hop on a train to Varenna, a charming town on the shores of Lake Como. And that's where the magic truly began.
Varenna: A Fairytale Unfolds
I was completely captivated! Every corner of Varenna feels like stepping into a storybook. The romantic Passeggiata degli Innamorati walkway, the vibrant flowerbeds lining the streets, the picturesque views from Villa Monastero, and the cheerful chirping of birds echoing through the narrow alleyways all contributed to its irresistible allure.
The shimmering lake and the pastel-colored houses clinging to the hillsides created an incredibly relaxing atmosphere. It was pure bliss.
Getting to Varenna is Easier Than You Think!
Traveling to Varenna is now simpler than ever! From Milano Centrale, a quick train ride (1 hour 30 minutes, approximately 7.5 EUR each way) delivers you to this hidden gem. Varenna is a small town with only about 800 residents, located 80 km from Milan. It boasts the ancient Church of San Giorgio and a ferry terminal connecting to other lovely towns like Bellagio and Como.
Villa Monastero and Beyond
Tickets to Villa Monastero cost around 10-13 EUR and can be purchased upon arrival. Nearby is Villa Cipressi, known for its wisteria-covered entrance overlooking the lake. Sadly, it was hosting a private event during my visit. But this just gives me an excellent reason to return someday!
Ferry Tickets: A Pro Tip!
If you plan to visit other towns by ferry, purchase your tickets as soon as you arrive in Varenna. Tickets aren't sold online, and the lines can be incredibly long. If you arrive early and it's less crowded, take advantage and buy your tickets in advance. You can use them anytime that day!
Delicious Lakeside Dining
I was pleasantly surprised by the incredible food! Be sure to savor an afternoon at a lakeside restaurant, watching the sunset while enjoying pasta or pizza. It's the perfect way to end a day of exploring.
