Conquering China Solo: My App Arsenal for Smooth Travels (Even Without Knowing Chinese!)
Traveling solo in China without speaking Chinese? Sounds intimidating, right? Well, I did it, and it was smoother than silk thanks to these incredible apps! Here's my personal experience and the apps I relied on for a fantastic independent trip.
Essential Apps for Your China Adventure:
-
AliPay - Your All-in-One Payment Powerhouse
Think of AliPay as your key to unlocking China! Use it for payments, the metro, taxis, bike rentals, and even receiving money. Important Note: As a foreigner, topping up and transferring money can be tricky. Also, sometimes you might see locals using QR codes that you can't scan because they're using personal accounts, not business ones.
-
WeChat - The Super App (with a Slight Learning Curve)
WeChat is even more powerful than AliPay, but it lacks full English support and verification can be a challenge. Some attractions only accept WeChat for ticket purchases, and some restaurants use it for their menus. I personally didn't use it for transportation. International users can only link bank cards to WeChat, not top it up directly.
-
Apple Maps - Your Reliable Navigator
I zoomed in on Apple Maps to pinpoint train station names and destinations. I tried using Amap, but it was all in Chinese (though I hear they have an English version now!).
-
Trip (formerly Ctrip) - Your Travel Agent in Your Pocket
This app is a lifesaver for booking high-speed train tickets and hotels. I booked 99% of my train tickets and 90% of my hotels through Trip – the prices are great, and it avoids foreign transaction fees since it's the international version of Ctrip. It even has a Vietnamese interface! I even booked domestic day tours through it.
-
Google Translate - Your Instant Interpreter
Essential for communicating with locals! I mainly used it to translate screenshots of Chinese apps or tour information. Just remember, it only works with a VPN!
-
LetsVPN - Your Window to the Outside World
I subscribed for two months and then canceled. It's decent and lets you browse TikTok, but expect some lag.
Bonus Tip:
It took me almost a month to discover apps for finding local restaurant reviews and amazing food! I'll show you the logos of those golden, orange, and green apps in the screenshots below!
Pro-Tip:
If you book a hotel or domestic tour and don't speak Chinese, contact the host via WeChat. WeChat has a built-in translation feature that translates messages to English. If you don't understand the English translation, screenshot it and use Google Translate!
