China 240 Hour Transit Without Visa Guide For Travelers

CHINA WITHOUT VISA: CLEARLY TIME-SAVING, BUT NOT NECESSARILY CHEAPER! 😅

(Trending heavily these days, but actually this is the port-of-entry transit visa type that the admin team has reviewed many times on the trip to Jeju, South Korea to waive both Korean and Chinese visas. Everyone, please update with more info to travel even better)

These days, people are going crazy over the news that China's National Immigration Administration (NIA) officially added Vietnam to the 240-hour (10-day) visa-free transit list starting August 20, 2026. Dying to go, but thinking about the line for visa application is exhausting, right?
This policy helps you save tons of time, but to avoid being ripped off and not being sent back from the airport, everyone READ CAREFULLY the information compilation below!
⚠️ 1. THIS IS TRANSIT WITHOUT VISA (TWOV), NOT A TOURIST VISA!
This means China must be a STOPPING POINT, not the final destination. Your plane ticket must fly onward to a 3rd country (not Vietnam).

  • VALID itineraries:
  • Vietnam ➔ China (travel maximum 10 days) ➔ South Korea (Jeju Island) / Singapore / Malaysia / Japan / Europe / US / Australia...
    • Vietnam ➔ China ➔ Thailand ➔ Vietnam (The Thailand/Vietnam leg is a separate journey, Chinese customs does not evaluate it. As long as your departing ticket from China flies to another country besides VN like Thailand or Singapore, it is fine). ⭐
  • REJECTED itineraries:
  • Vietnam ➔ China ➔ Vietnam (Round trip).
    • Vietnam ➔ Beijing ➔ Shanghai ➔ Vietnam (Traveling across domestic Chinese cities then returning directly to the departure country).

🎫 2. DO TICKETS HAVE TO BE BOOKED WITH THE SAME AIRLINE?
NO NEED! You can totally buy separate tickets: first leg with airline A, next leg with airline B. The regulation accepts both TRAIN and FERRY tickets departing China, so connecting with the same airline is not required.
The only conditions needed: Tickets are issued and paid for; with clear flight dates and times; departing within 240 hours.
💡 Hard-earned tips when booking separate tickets:

  • Print out the PDF e-ticket for the leg departing China in advance. Check-in staff in VN cannot look up other airlines' systems; showing a screenshot of the app makes it very easy to get a hard time.
  • Do not book the departing leg too close to the last day. Booking separately has no interline insurance, if the first flight is delayed the next flight ticket is lost, so leave a 1-2 day buffer to be safe.

🗺️ 3. WHERE CAN YOU GO AND WHERE CAN YOU NOT GO?

  • Allowed to go: Enter through 65 ports of entry across 24 provinces/cities (Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Xi'an, Chengdu, Chongqing, Guangxi...). Whichever port of entry you enter through, you can travel within the designated administrative area of that port. Enter through this port but allowed to exit at another open port.
  • BANNED: This policy does NOT apply in Tibet, Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia, Gansu, Qinghai, Ningxia, Jilin.

⏰ 4. THE "CHEATING" TIP FOR COUNTING HOURS TO GET THE LONGEST STAY TIME
The 240-hour clock DOES NOT run from the moment you land. It runs from 00:00 of the NEXT DAY.
For example: You land in Guangzhou at 8 AM on Sept 1 ➔ The 240 hours start counting from 00:00 on Sept 2 ➔ You can stay until 23:59 on Sept 11.
Tip: Choose a flight landing in the evening, and you will gorgeously get almost 1 extra free day! (Overstaying fines from 500 yuan/day and extensions are not allowed).
✈️ 5. THE MANTRA TO AVOID BEING HASSLED BY THE CHECK-IN COUNTER
The official term is "TWOV" (Transit Without Visa), not "transit visa". At the airport, just say the exact keyword "TWOV" and ask them to check the Timatic system if they stammer and demand to see your Chinese visa.
📋 WHAT TO PREPARE BEFORE GOING:

  • Ordinary passport valid for more than 3 months.
  • ISSUED ticket departing China (not buying a ticket in advance gets you rejected immediately).
  • Electronic entry declaration card (QR code) filled out on the NIA service website: https://nia.gov.cn

In short, whoever is planning to fly to Southeast Asia or Japan/Korea/Europe/US in the near future, just time your layover through China and you naturally get 10 days of super rewarding visa-"free" travel!
Which of you is planning a specific itinerary, comment your flight route below and I will check the permissible travel scope of that port for you! 👇
