Santa Monica Pier: Your Guide to the Iconic California Dream

Don't go to Santa Monica Pier if you think it's just a picturesque pier for Instagram photos... because you'll miss half of the “California dream” 😏

Santa Monica Pier is a combo of pier + Pacific Park amusement park right on the sea, with the solar-powered Pacific Wheel Ferris wheel overlooking the endless coastline straight out of an American movie.

This is also the “legendary” end point of Route 66, so walk to the end of the pier to gaze at the sea, look at the Route 66 sign, and snap a photo for an instant “end of the American journey” story that's very something and this and that.

Experience the “full set”: ride the Ferris wheel to watch the sunset, stroll the park, play carnival games, go down under the pier to walk the beach, and if you like, visit Heal the Bay Aquarium to see local sea creatures.

The best “bargain” tip: entry to the pier is completely free, you only spend money if you want to ride rides or play games, so you can spend an entire afternoon to evening just strolling, gazing at the sea, listening to music, watching street performers without spending a dime.

To avoid the crowds: prioritize weekdays and mornings or late afternoons; weekends, especially evenings, the pier is packed, movement is slow, and it's very hard to get “few people” photos.

One more small tip: bring a thin jacket even in summer, because the evening sea breeze is quite cold; plus a water bottle, sunscreen, beach towel to conveniently jump down to the beach right next to the pier and then come back up to play.

If you still have energy, rent a bike to ride along the coastal path from Santa Monica to Venice Beach, pedal while gazing at the sea, then return to the pier when the lights come on for a complete “California coast” loop in one day.

Would you choose Santa Monica Pier in the quiet cool morning, or “wait” for the sunset lights when it's really crowded for the true California vibe?
