Explore Brunei's Royal Regalia Museum and Royal Treasures

Royal Regalia Museum – The Splendid Royal Museum, Telling the Story of Brunei's Dynasty
In my exploration of Brunei, I didn't miss the Royal Regalia Museum – also known as Muzium Alat Kebesaran Diraja – one of the most representative and impressive museums in this small, wealthy country. The museum is located right in the center of the capital Bandar Seri Begawan, walkable from the Sultan Omar Mosque – very convenient if you combine visiting both in one session.

The museum was established to commemorate the 25th anniversary of His Majesty Hassanal Bolkiah's ascension to the throne – also known as the Silver Jubilee. The building looks not too large from the outside, but once inside, I realized the space is much wider than imagined – you can easily spend more than an hour just to go through all the exhibition areas.

What’s attractive inside?

The coronation regalia of His Majesty: the royal scepter, crown, traditional attire displayed solemnly and in detail.

Royal horse-drawn carriage – one of the highlights that amazes many people the most.

Thousands of gifts from leaders and countries around the world – looking at this shows Brunei's diplomatic influence.

Miniature model inside the Nurul Iman Palace – the only way to "visit" the royal palace since it's not open to the public.

The interior space is designed spacious, comfortable, air-conditioned, clean, and secure.

Things to know before visiting:

Entrance fee about 5 Brunei dollars/person (foreigners) – completely worth it.

Must remove shoes before entering inside – remember to wear socks or easy-to-remove sandals.

Photography allowed only on the lower floor; no photos on the upper floor. Phones and personal items must be left at the counter outside before entering the main exhibition area – a bit inconvenient but it's a mandatory rule.

The museum opens from 9 AM, closes in the afternoon – check specific hours before coming as there are lunch breaks.

My suggestion:
Visit in the morning from 9-11 AM when the museum is not crowded yet and the light is good to admire the artifacts. Combine with the nearby Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin Mosque for a complete morning exploring the center of BSB. If you want to understand more deeply about the dynasty and Brunei's history, this is definitely a must-stop!
