Do you know why Vietnamese people call the Chinese in Vietnam "Ba Tàu"? I heard it told like this:
When the Qing Dynasty invaded and took over the Ming Dynasty, the Ming loyalists migrated south to our Vietnam on big ships, asking the Nguyen lords for land to live on.
There were three groups of Chinese who came to Vietnam. Group 1 was the group of Tran Thang Tai, Tran Thuong Xuyen in Cu Lao Pho (Dong Nai). Group 2 was Duong Ngan Dich to My Tho. Group 3 was Mac Cuu to Ha Tien. So "Ba Tau" refers to the Chinese who came to Vietnam by ship. From here they built wealthy Chinese communities with all kinds of professions.
There is one quite interesting detail, in temples, shrines or assembly halls, there are usually two statues placed on both sides: Mr. To and Mrs. Nguyet, the exact names are Mr. Nhat (hand holding a slightly red round image representing the Sun) Mrs. Nguyet (hand holding a white round image representing the moon) and Nhat ( 日 ) + Nguyet ( 月 ) combined is MINH ( 明 ) the Ming Dynasty. Because those who came to VN were all from the Ming Dynasty and waiting for "Phan Thanh Phuc Minh".
The Cu Lao Pho group, when the Tay Son entered the South to fight Lord Nguyen Anh, beat the Chinese in Cu Lao Pho a lot, so they migrated to the present-day Cho Lon area.
