Conquer Hallasan: Seongpanak vs. Gwaneumsa Trail Guide

1. Seongpanak Trail

The most representative Hallasan climbing course — the only route that can go to Baengnokdam.

Starting point: Seongpanak Trail Entrance (Jeju City 1100-ro 2070-61)

Distance to summit: about 9.6km (one way)

Total time required: round trip 8~9 hours

Summit (Baengnokdam) entry closing time: recommended to depart before 7 AM (entry restriction after 14:00)

Bus Routes:

From Jeju Airport → Express Bus 181 → Get off at Seongpanak Entrance (about 1 hour)

From Jeju Intercity Bus Terminal → Take 281

Parking:

Public parking lot in front of Seongpanak Visitor Information Center (free)

Nearby cafe/restaurant paid parking lots (around 3,000 won) also available

Course Features:

Gentle course with repeating forest paths and rocky paths

Ascends to 1700m above sea level, proceeding in order: Sokbat Shelter → Jindallaebat Shelter → Baengnokdam Summit

Two restrooms/rest areas in the middle

TIP:

Takes more than 9 hours round trip, so essential to depart before 6 AM!

Strong winds at the summit area, so must wear windbreaker + windproof hat

2. Gwaneumsa Trail

Steep incline but the course with the most spectacular summit scenery

Starting point: 516-ro 1717, Jocheon-eup, Jeju City (Gwaneumsa Entrance)

Distance: about 9.2km (one way)

Time required: round trip about 8.5~9.5 hours

Features: Gentle forest path at the beginning, but very steep incline in the mid-to-late sections

Bus Routes:

Jeju Airport → Express 181 → Get off at Gwaneumsa Entrance

Intercity Bus Terminal → Bus 281

Parking:

Public parking lot at Gwaneumsa Trail Entrance (free)

Temporary parking lot near Visitor Information Center available

Course Features:

Forest path at the beginning, rocky ridge area and steep incline in mid-to-late sections

The eastern Jeju panoramic view from the observatory just before Baengnokdam is breathtaking

Also possible to combine by ascending via Seongpanak and descending via Gwaneumsa (connected by public transport)

TIP:

High stamina consumption, not recommended for beginners.

Most commonly used as a descent-only course.
