Sài Gòn's Unique Temple: Stomp Out Bad Luck and Find Peace

Discover Saigon's Famous "Step on Villains" Temple for Peace

Yes, right in Saigon, there's a renowned temple called Hội Quán Ôn Lăng—also known as Ôn Lăng Temple or Quan Âm Temple—where crowds flock to perform the unique "step on villains" ritual for good luck and tranquility.

What Makes This 300-Year-Old Gem So Special?

This cultural treasure in District 5's heart was built by Fujian Chinese immigrants from Quanzhou Prefecture in 1740. Originally dedicated to Thiên Hậu Thánh Mẫu (Mazu), it later honored Quan Âm Bodhisattva, earning its popular name, Quan Âm Temple.

The star attraction? The **"step on villains"** ritual. Devotees stomp fiercely on paper effigies symbolizing backstabbers and troublemakers. This act is believed to banish negativity, dodge gossip and sabotage, and invite peace and fortune. The temple also hosts Thái Tuế worship and Tam Tai resolution ceremonies for extra spiritual protection.

A Glimpse into Its Rich History and Stunning Architecture

Over three centuries old, the hội quán spans about 1,800 square meters with classic Chinese temple layout: "inner sanctum, outer court." Its curved, tube-tiled roofs scream Fujian style, adorned with vibrant ceramic dragons, phoenixes, castles, and figures.

Inside, treasures from the Qing Dynasty shine—ancient bells, iron incense burners, inscribed plaques, and couplets. One standout couplet was gifted by a Chinese scholar in 1901. The site has been lovingly restored six times: 1828, 1867, 1897, 1993, 1995, and 2017. Recognized as a National Artistic Architectural Relic in 2002, it's a living piece of Saigon's Chinese heritage.

Sacred Spaces and Vibrant Festivals

Two main worship halls await:

  • Front Hall: Dedicated to Thiên Hậu Thánh Mẫu.
  • Back Hall: Home to the primary deity, Quan Âm Bodhisattva.

The biggest bash? Quan Âm's birthday on the 19th of the 6th lunar month. Thousands of Buddhists and tourists swarm for prayers, rituals, and blessings. Don't miss the "step on villains" around March 5-6 (solar calendar), done before the Tiger Spirit altar.
