Cameron Highlands Trails Closed: Don't Come for Hiking
Warning — Cameron Highlands: Trails and Mossy Forest Closed
We arrived in Tanah Rata yesterday and discovered several important closures that ruined much of our trekking plans.
What happened
After contacting multiple agencies, one finally replied that the Mossy Forest is closed following a landslide and safety concerns; tours have been altered or replaced accordingly.
Trails closed
- When we reached Trail No. 4 it was closed, with a notice saying all trails and treks have been closed since October 25th.
- Other visitor reports and trail guides show many jungle trails are closed or seasonally shut (some mentions of closures lasting through the monsoon/rainy season), making independent trekking unreliable.
If you came to hike or trek
Don't come expecting open jungle trails or the Mossy Forest right now — unless you're only interested in the surrounding tea plantations, farm attractions (butterfly farms, strawberry farms), or other built attractions, there's little available for independent nature trekkers.
Practical notes
- There's effectively no central official tourist information in town to warn visitors in advance — most updates come from tour operators and online notices.
- If you still want to explore, check with operators for alternative treks (some tours replace Mossy Forest with nearby options) and confirm trail status before going out.
Our experience
We're very disappointed — three days of our trip were effectively lost because the key natural attractions and jungle trails were closed.
