Gifu in Winter: A Magical Japanese Escape
My partner and I recently embarked on a winter adventure to Gifu, Japan, and discovered a truly magical escape. Winter in Gifu unfolds with breathtaking scenery and rich cultural discoveries, creating an unforgettable journey.
Exploring Takayama: Stepping Back in Time
Our exploration began in Takayama, a captivating city nestled amidst the majestic Japanese Alps. The beautifully preserved Sanmachi Suji district was an absolute highlight. Wandering through its streets, lined with traditional wooden buildings, sake breweries, and charming shops, felt like a journey into the past. The snow-covered lanes, illuminated by the soft glow of lanterns at dusk, offered a picture-perfect ambiance, ideal for capturing stunning photographs. We also visited the Hida Folk Village, an open-air museum that showcases traditional houses, many beautifully adorned with snow – a true delight for winter photography enthusiasts.

Shirakawa-go: A Surreal UNESCO Gem
Next, we journeyed to Shirakawa-go, the iconic UNESCO World Heritage village. The sight of its unique gassho-zukuri farmhouses, blanketed in pristine snow, was nothing short of surreal. We spent time exploring the village and made our way to the Shiroyama Viewpoint. From this vantage point, the panoramic vistas of the entire village laid out before us were spectacular, especially during sunrise and sunset. The tranquil atmosphere made this one of the most cherished stops of our trip. For an truly unforgettable experience, we highly recommend staying until evening to witness the houses illuminated by gentle lights – a photographer's dream.

Gero Onsen: Serenity in Snowy Surroundings
Our travels also led us to Gero Onsen, renowned as one of Japan's premier hot spring destinations. The exquisite combination of soothing onsen baths and the tranquil, snowy landscape was incredibly rejuvenating. We captured beautiful moments at the Gassho Village, a charming smaller replica of Shirakawa-go, and savored the peaceful views along the river. This spot offered the perfect blend of capturing winter's serenity while unwinding. For a truly immersive experience, indulging in an outdoor onsen bath is an absolute must.
