Thai Travel Card Comparison: Finding the Best Exchange Rate for Spending in Thailand

Thai Travel Card Comparison: Finding the Best Exchange Rate for Spending in Thailand

Unveiling My Thailand Trip Card Exchange Rates: A Real-World Comparison

I'm excited to share my personal experience and insights into the exchange rates of five different cards I used during my recent trip to Thailand in early August. I made purchases with all five cards on the same day, August 6th, and compiled a comparison of their exchange rates.

The Contenders: My Tested Cards

The cards I put to the test were:

  • Kbank
  • Lpbank Sign
  • VCB Sign
  • VIB Travel Elite
  • UOB Prvi Miles

To make the comparison crystal clear, I've used an example of 10,000 Thai Baht for each card, even though the actual amounts I spent varied. This way, you can easily see the differences in how each card performed.

Key Takeaways from My Thai Spending Spree

After analyzing the transaction data, here are my main conclusions:

  1. Using cards is definitely more convenient than carrying a lot of cash.
  2. Out of the five cards I used, Lpbank Sign emerged as the top performer. VIB Travel and UOB came in as close seconds.
  3. For Kbank, it seems most beneficial to limit your spending to around 2 million VND to take advantage of a 300,000 VND cashback bonus, which equates to a 15% reward.
  4. In Thailand, using UOB can be extra rewarding as you get triple bonus points for every 25,000 Thai Baht spent.

My Go-To Travel Strategy

I frequently travel to Thailand for both work and leisure, and I primarily rely on my credit cards. On each trip, I usually only exchange about 10 million VND into Thai Baht to have on hand for smaller purchases or at markets. Any unused cash I bring back, and for everything else, I opt to pay with my card. In Thailand, Kbank and UOB are widely accepted, with their ATMs readily available everywhere.

Previously, VCB Sign was my usual choice. However, this time, as my VCB card had met its spending requirements, I found myself using Lpbank and UOB the most. I honestly didn't pay close attention to the exact exchange rates at the time, but reviewing my statements now has revealed some interesting patterns. It turns out, the two cards I used most frequently offered the most favorable exchange rates – what good luck!

I plan to share my findings on card exchange rates from Japan and China next month. Stay tuned!
