Myanmar Travel Update: What You Need to Know
Planning a trip to Myanmar? Here's a fresh look at what to expect on the ground, straight from recent experiences.
Security Situation
For now, the popular tourist destinations are holding steady in terms of safety, offering a semblance of normalcy for travelers.
Tourist Foot Traffic
Don't expect crowded streets. My own flight had only six international passengers, and upon arriving at the hostel, I found just one family of four and four other travelers. You'll spot other tourists here and there, but it's far from bustling.
Getting Around
While there were some rumors about train travel restrictions for tourists, I found that purchasing tickets for the Yangon to Mandalay route was still possible. Ultimately, I opted for an overnight bus from Yangon to Bagan, and then proceeded to Mandalay.
The journey between Yangon and Bagan, or vice versa, offers frequent departures, including overnight options. However, travel between Bagan and Mandalay is limited to daytime bus services.
Important Note: When passing through checkpoints, be sure to put away your phones, cameras, and remove any headphones. Initially, I wasn't aware of this, but a helpful local traveler sitting next to me explained it clearly (as shown in Image 8).
Internet Connectivity
Internet access remains completely blocked. To stay connected, download Jump Jump VPN before you arrive. Other VPNs I tried couldn't access social media platforms. Be aware that even with a VPN, connections can sometimes drop unexpectedly.
Power Supply
In Bagan, expect power outages for a few hours during the day, and sometimes the electricity is out at night. It's wise to pack a portable power bank.
I'll share more updates as I discover them.
