Ladakh, India: A Late July Trip, Altitude Tips, and Stunning Photos

Ladakh: An Unforgettable Himalayan Adventure

I recently returned from an incredible 8-day journey through Ladakh in late July with Himalayanz Mount. I have to admit, Ladakh is breathtakingly beautiful. I've come back so smitten, and even when I share photos with friends, they can hardly believe I was in India.

Many people have already shared their experiences of Ladakh, so I'll focus on a few points that were particularly relevant and helpful for me during my trip. Drawing from personal experience, I've learned a few tricks that made my journey smoother.

Navigating the High Altitudes

Despite a history of asthma, I was fortunate enough not to need an oxygen tank throughout the entire trip. This was a huge relief and something I was initially concerned about. To support my acclimatization, I diligently took altitude sickness medication, vitamin C, and a brain-boosting supplement daily, precisely on schedule.

Essential Travel Comforts

The weather in Ladakh is quite dry, so I found that packing a variety of skin care products was essential. This included sunscreen, hand cream, body lotion, facial masks, and lip balm. My skin tends to get chapped in arid conditions, and these items were a lifesaver. If you wear prescription glasses for mild nearsightedness and are considering contact lenses, I'd advise against it. The dryness made wearing them uncomfortable, requiring me to use eye drops every hour or two. High-quality sunglasses are also a must to combat the intense glare.

I also found a nasal spray to be incredibly useful. The car journeys involved a lot of dust and exhaust fumes, and cleaning my nose afterwards was a rather unpleasant experience. While I did bring a hairdryer, it unexpectedly failed one day in Nubra Valley. Thankfully, our tour guide was able to borrow a mini hairdryer from our homestay host.

Fueling the Adventure

Food is always a consideration when traveling, and I packed instant noodles and bouillon cubes. Generally, Indian food is palatable, but it can be a bit dry. While fine for a couple of meals, eating it for 8 consecutive days became a bit monotonous for me. Having these familiar comfort foods on hand was a good backup.

Staying Fresh and Clean

Wet wipes and separate towels for personal hygiene were also on my packing list. These came in handy for keeping fresh throughout the day, especially during excursions.

Weather Preparedness

During my visit, the weather wasn't extremely cold, with the chill primarily felt at Pangong Lake and Nubra Valley. It was genuinely cold at Pangong Lake in the evenings. The temperature I checked generally for my travel time was around 23 degrees Celsius in the afternoon, dropping to about 13 degrees Celsius in the evening. Therefore, it's wise to pack warm clothing. Layering is key for comfort in fluctuating temperatures.

Capturing Memories

I had a slight worry about group tours not being conducive to getting great photos of myself. However, by sheer luck, a fellow traveler had a photography style that perfectly matched my preferences, resulting in some stunning shots I'm so thrilled with.

Our Exceptional Tour Guide: Gyus

Our tour guide, Gyus, was truly exceptional. He was incredibly attentive to the entire group, always willing to take photos and videos for us, and provided support from morning till night. He was genuinely helpful in every way possible and was very accommodating when we had any changes or requests regarding the itinerary.
