Starlux: A Story of Ambition Forged from a Power Struggle
The Genesis of an Airline
Many have inquired about Starlux Airlines, so I'm sharing a brief overview of its origins. The story centers around two prominent figures: Chang Yung-Fa (CYF), the founder of Evergreen Group and later EVA Airways, and his youngest son, Chang Kuo-wei (CKW).
CYF had five children, four from his first marriage and CKW from his second. While his older children primarily focused on business matters, CKW gravitated towards the technical side. He started at EVA Airways as a mechanic, progressing to pilot, and eventually becoming the chairman after mastering every facet of the airline's operations.
A Disputed Inheritance and a New Vision
In 2016, before his passing, CYF bequeathed EVA Airways and the Evergreen Group to CKW. However, his other children contested the will, alleging he was not of sound mind when it was written. During the ensuing legal battle, they orchestrated a board vote that ousted CKW from his position as chairman of EVA.
Undeterred, CKW announced his intention to establish a new airline, Starlux. He believed that the two major Taiwanese carriers, EVA and China Airlines, had become complacent, primarily catering to budget travelers. Therefore, he envisioned Starlux as a premium airline. With his extensive knowledge gained from years at EVA, CKW swiftly prepared everything within a couple of years, and Starlux officially launched in 2020.
A Premium Experience
Passengers who have flown Starlux often describe a distinct experience compared to EVA or China Airlines. Upon entering the cabin, one is immediately struck by the elegant and sophisticated design. The color schemes of the seats and carpets are noticeably more refined, yet the ticket prices are comparable, and sometimes even lower, than those of EVA or China Airlines. The service is enhanced, the seats feel more spacious, the entertainment screens are modern, and the food is arguably better.
Convenient New Routes
Starlux also offers new and more convenient routes. For example, those residing in Southern California traveling to Vietnam now have the option of flying from Ontario Airport, offering a faster check-in process and less crowding compared to LAX.
In conclusion, given the choice, I would currently prioritize Starlux over EVA and China Airlines. For those who have yet to experience Starlux, I encourage you to give it a try. I've heard great things about their business class seats!
