Budapest on a Budget: Transportation, Must-See Views, & Hidden Gems (A Personal Guide)

Budapest Travel Tips – Europe's Most Stunning Cityscape!

In my personal opinion, Budapest truly shines as the most architecturally beautiful city in Europe! These are my own cherished tips.

Getting from the Airport to the City Center

Here are your best options for reaching the heart of Budapest from the airport:

  • Bus 100E: This direct service will whisk you to the city center for approximately 2,200 HUF (around 5€). It's a straightforward and convenient choice.
  • The Savvy Traveler's Choice: For the most economical approach, invest in an unlimited public transport pass. You can opt for 24-hour, 72-hour, or even a 15-day pass. This covers your journey to and from the airport, plus all your city explorations.
    • As I stayed for a week, the 15-day pass at 5,000 HUF (about 12€) was perfect. It allowed me to freely use the metro, buses, and trams throughout the city.
    • To get from the airport using this pass, take bus 200E, then transfer to Metro M3, which will take you back to the center.
  • Taxis and Ride-Sharing: You can call a taxi directly or head to the designated dispatch counter at the airport. Services like Bolt or Uber are also readily available. Prices are clearly listed, so you don't need to worry about unexpected charges.

Unforgettable Tram Journeys

You absolutely must experience Budapest's trams – they offer some of the most breathtaking views! Your public transport pass covers these scenic rides.

  • Tram 2: Hop on at Jászai Mari tér and follow the route along the Danube's Pest side. This iconic line passes the magnificent Parliament House. For the best experience, I highly recommend a daytime or sunset ride.
  • Trams 19 or 41: Start your journey from Szent Gellért tér to explore the Buda side, offering stunning vistas of Pest. Riding these in the evening allows you to see the city sparkle as it lights up. Make sure to stop at Batthyány tér for an absolutely jaw-dropping photo opportunity with the Parliament!
  • Tram 49: This route crosses the Liberty Bridge, providing truly beautiful scenery. Many people enjoy simply sitting on the bridge with a drink and soaking in the atmosphere.
  • Tram 4-6: This tram circles the city. A ride along this route, especially over Margaret Bridge in the afternoon, offers golden hour views of the Parliament that are simply magical. While this section is currently undergoing renovations and replaced by bus 4-6, you can still enjoy the captivating sights.

Must-See Attractions (If Time is Limited)

If you're pressed for time, prioritize these incredible landmarks:

  • Parliament House
  • Buda Castle
  • Fisherman's Bastion
  • Gellért Hill
  • New York Café
  • Vörösmarty Square and Andrássy Avenue for shopping
  • St. Stephen's Basilica
