My Solo Singapore Adventure: Tips for Your Trip!
Just got back from a 3-day, 2-night solo trip to Singapore, and I've got some tips to share so your trip is even better than mine!
Budget-Friendly Accommodation
I stayed at the Royal Lodge dorm in Chinatown to save some money. It was just over a million VND for two nights. Check-in was simple - only needed to meet someone initially. After that, the main door and each dorm use a password, making it super convenient. Since it's a budget-friendly dorm, remember to bring your own towel, shampoo, and body wash. There aren't slippers provided, but the floor was clean enough. A small padlock is also a good idea to secure your locker. I didn't bring one and ended up buying one for almost 5 SGD! Oh well, better safe than sorry. The location was fantastic! Right in a shopping area for souvenirs, and super close to the MRT, bus stops, and a 7-Eleven. I loved the convenience.
Essential Packing List
- Don't forget a 3-prong adapter!
- Bring an umbrella for the sun. Singapore is sunny, but the air is clean, making walking enjoyable.
- Wear comfortable walking or running shoes! Whether you're using the MRT or bus, you'll be doing a lot of walking. Exploring attractions also requires a good pair of shoes. Avoid flats or stiff shoes – your feet will thank you!
Getting Around
Navigating by bus is easier than the MRT because the map positioning is accurate. The MRT is underground, so pay close attention to find the correct exits. Singapore's roads and buildings are beautiful, so I preferred taking the bus to enjoy the scenery. I loved it!
Connectivity & Tickets
I bought an eSIM with my plane ticket – it was a bargain! Buying tickets for attractions online is cheaper than buying them in person. Since it was my first time, I wandered around, buying tickets for the places that caught my eye. Worth every penny! The higher the price, the better the experience. They really invest in quality experiences.
Stay Hydrated & Fed
Bring a water bottle to refill from your dorm. There are water refill stations at the airport, so remember to bring an empty bottle. I usually wandered around from morning to afternoon, returned to the dorm to shower and rest, then refilled my water bottle and continued exploring until night. Keep you refreshed and save you money. Load about 25-30 SGD onto your EZ-Link card for unlimited MRT and bus rides. I loaded 50 SGD, so I bought things at 7-Eleven, which accepts EZ-Link payments.
Pack some instant noodles! Dorms have kitchens where you can boil water, and there's free instant coffee. I tried a few food courts, but I only liked the one at Marina Bay Sands, right at the entrance to the ArtScience Museum. The food was delicious! Next time, I'll plan to eat there around late afternoon, then explore the area. The Spectra light and water show and the Garden by the Bays light show are nearby.
First-Time Tourist Tips
As a first-time traveler abroad with a last-minute ticket purchase, I prioritized sightseeing. Next time, I'll definitely research the food scene more thoroughly.
Stay Charged On The Go
Many buses have phone charging ports, so always carry your charging cable with your power bank to top up your battery. The USB ports are very convenient.
Airport Transportation
If traveling from Chinatown to Changi Airport, you can take the MRT directly. Google Maps might suggest two MRT rides and a bus, so pay attention when heading to the airport. Chinatown to Expo, then ask for directions to Changi; people will point you in the right direction.
Changi Airport Wonders
To get the best view of the Jewel waterfall, stand near the train entrance. I went from T3 to T2, stood still, filmed, and then went back to T3. Changi is beautiful, so arrive early on your departure day to explore it to your heart's content!
Souvenir Shopping
Buy souvenirs in Chinatown or Mustafa. Mustafa has so much stuff that I got lost! But the prices aren't that different. Next time, I'll just stick to Chinatown, which has enough variety without being overwhelming. But if you're looking for chocolate, Mustafa has a wide selection. I prefer souvenirs.
