My European Sleeper Train Adventure: Prague to Amsterdam

This trip to Europe was full of firsts! One of them was taking an overnight train from Prague to Amsterdam. After reading some reviews, I knew the European Sleeper might be a little older, but I chose it to save money instead of taking the newer trains that cost two or three times as much.

Facing the Reality of Overnight Train Travel

As I boarded the train and entered my compartment, I realized that this 13-hour journey was going to be quite a challenge. The compartment had two rows of seats facing each other, with six seats in total. It was already full, with only my spot open. Across from me sat a rather large woman, whose body spilled over the seat. When I sat down, my knees touched hers because I'm also...well, substantial! 😂 I took a deep breath and thought: "It's only 13 hours, I can do this."

Finding Connection in a Crowded Space

The compartment felt stuffy and cramped for everyone, not just me. We were all suffering together! But we all just had to bear it. Everyone had to stand up to let me squeeze in. As soon as I sat down, the woman across from me broke the slightly awkward silence with a statement: "It seems we're all going to go through this situation together!" She said it with a smile and a Czech-tinged English accent. I felt for her; she probably felt a bit embarrassed. I really appreciated how she lightened the heavy atmosphere. I smiled back and started chatting to liven things up. It's kind of what I do 😂 After five minutes, the whole compartment was bursting with laughter!

A Comfortable, Respectful Journey

Ten minutes after the train departed, the woman felt too suffocated and asked to move to a seat near the door. That left me sitting across from a very polite Indian man. And my knees no longer touched anyone else's knees! Throughout the journey, the compartment was cramped, but everyone was respectful and considerate of each other. I woke up five or six times during the night because sleeping upright was a bit uncomfortable on my back, but I felt safe sleeping alongside these strangers. I'm happy I chose this trip! 😊
