Thailand is doubling down on its commitment to tourism, embarking on a massive expansion of Suvarnabhumi Airport. Get ready for some serious walking – in a good way! The project includes a sprawling new South Terminal and other significant upgrades.
Suvarnabhumi Set for a Huge Upgrade
Airports of Thailand (AOT) has upped its investment ante, adjusting the Suvarnabhumi expansion project from 140 billion baht to a whopping 170 billion baht. What's included in this ambitious plan? Let's take a look:
-
South Terminal: This colossal terminal will boast a staggering 1 million square meters of space, capable of handling 70 million passengers annually. It's projected to be the world's second-largest single passenger terminal, just behind Istanbul Airport!
-
Fourth Runway: More space for takeoffs and landings.
-
East Expansion: An expansion of the existing main passenger terminal.
-
VIP Terminal: An exclusive 80,000 square meter terminal located at the end of Hall A.
-
General Aviation Terminal (GA Terminal): A dedicated 100,000 square meter terminal.
-
Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) Center: A state-of-the-art facility for aircraft maintenance.
-
Airport City: A sprawling 550 rai (approximately 216 acres) development.
Upon completion, Suvarnabhumi Airport will have the capacity to handle a total of 150 million passengers per year when combining the passenger areas of all terminals. This is expected to make Suvarnabhumi the second-largest airport complex in the world, after Dubai Airport. Construction is slated to begin in 2027, with the grand opening planned for 2033.
