Fondation Louis Vuitton: A Modern Parisian Architectural Gem
Exploring Art and Architecture in the Bois de Boulogne
For my 12th post, I'm excited to share my experience at the Fondation Louis Vuitton, a museum that seems to resonate with many of you, especially those drawn to its popular merchandise. As a devoted admirer of Paris, I regularly visit the city to study its architectural design, both classic and contemporary.
Every weekend, I aim to highlight intriguing examples of modern Parisian architecture. This time, it's all about the Fondation Louis Vuitton.
This grand architectural marvel, dedicated to art, opened its doors in 2014 within the Bois de Boulogne. Its design is the brainchild of Frank Gehry, the globally renowned American architect.
Gehry is celebrated for his pursuit of curvilinear beauty, evident in iconic structures like the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles and the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. Fun fact: he also designed "Fish Dance" in Kobe, Japan.
The Fondation Louis Vuitton comprises 3,600 glass panels and a staggering 19,000 concrete panels, giving it the appearance of a colossal sailing vessel.
Gehry's vision was to create an architecture that evolves with time and light, mirroring the ever-changing world around us. The design and construction are truly awe-inspiring.
While the building's form is intricate, its color palette remains simple. However, during a temporary art installation in 2016 (the Daniel Buren exhibition), colored films were applied to the glass panels. I remember being deeply moved by the sheer artistry and Parisian sensibility during this event. (I've included photos comparing the standard and limited-edition versions.)
This distinctive style is part of what makes Paris so captivating and why I find myself drawn back time and again.
Getting There
The closest metro station is Les Sablons on Line 1. While a shuttle bus is available from the Arc de Triomphe (free with a museum ticket), it tends to be crowded. I recommend enjoying a leisurely walk through the forest from the metro station if the weather permits.
