If you have already lost yourself in the musical world of Salzburg, you certainly cannot miss a very special little corner right in the heart of the old town: Mozart's Birthplace. Just by leisurely strolling along the bustling Getreidegasse street, you will easily recognize the striking yellow house where the musical genius Mozart was born on January 27, 1756.
This ancient location has many fascinating things:
It is also called Hagenauerhaus by the locals, named after the Hagenauer landlord family dating all the way back to 1703. The Mozart family lived in the apartment on the Dritter Stock—the third floor of the building—from 1747 to 1773. This is also where the young boy Wolfgang spent his peaceful childhood with his parents and sister Nannerl.
Since 1880, the International Mozarteum Foundation has turned this place into the Mozart Geburtshaus museum. Stepping inside, you feel as though you are walking through a time door to return to the 18th century with a living space fully recreated from original furniture and mementos connected to his childhood to special Sonderausstellung exhibitions that change every year.
Whether just standing outside watching the flow of people on the ancient street or buying a ticket to visit the interior space, the feeling of touching a piece of world musical history remains extremely touching. Remember to put Mozart's Birthplace on the list of coordinates you must visit when coming to Salzburg!
