Canada Launches Digital Visa Pilot: A Giant Leap Toward Paperless Travel
Starting in late 2025, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has quietly introduced a pilot program to test the future of international travel: digital visas. Currently, a select group of Moroccan citizens approved for visitor visas are receiving both a digital visa and the traditional physical sticker in their passports. This trial is designed to stress-test the digital system across various touchpoints—including airline check-in and border security—before considering a wider global expansion.
If this pilot yields positive results, the era of mailing physical passports to embassies for visa stickers could be coming to an end. In the near future, Canadian visa holders may simply carry a digital visa credential, accessible through an online account and verifiable via a secure QR code. This shift promises to streamline the application process and significantly reduce the administrative burden for travelers.
