Family Guide to Singapore: A Perfect 4D3N First International Adventure
Our family of five—two adults and three children—recently returned from a 4-day, 3-night trip to Singapore. While some argue that Singapore is too industrial, artificial, or expensive, I believe it is the ideal destination for a first international family trip. It is exceptionally safe, clean, and just a short flight from Vietnam (about 2.5 hours). Having visited 4-5 times before, I felt confident navigating the city and visiting friends while introducing my children to a new culture.
Here is my detailed review and travel guide for those planning a self-guided family trip to Singapore.
1. Flights and Accommodation
Flights: I booked our tickets about three months in advance using Skyscanner to compare prices and schedules. We chose Scoot for the flight out (purchasing 40kg of checked baggage) and Vietnam Airlines for the return flight. For a family of six (including one relative who unfortunately couldn't join last minute), the total cost was approximately 26 million VND.
Hotel: I booked via Agoda, prioritizing space and location. Budget hotels in Singapore are notoriously small, so I looked for a 4-star option with a kitchenette to warm up food for my toddler. We chose Studio M Hotel in the Clarke Quay area. We stayed in a "Duplex" room, which features a loft. The lower level had a sofa bed and a kitchenette, while the loft featured a queen-size bed. The hotel also has a great pool for the kids.
Pro Tip: While the hotel was lovely, the nearest MRT station is about 700-800m away. If you are traveling with small children, be prepared for some complaints about the walking distance!
2. Essential Preparations
Packing: Traveling with three children is like moving a miniature house. To keep things manageable, we consolidated everything into two large checked suitcases. I kept one carry-on bag for milk, snacks, and water, and one foldable bag for jackets. We brought our stroller to the boarding gate, and the airline staff returned it to us at the baggage claim upon arrival.
Connectivity and Transport: Since my husband’s phone doesn't support eSIM, I prepared two physical Singtel SIM cards (100GB data for 7 days) and four EZ-Link cards for public transport. I also pre-booked tickets for Gardens by the Bay and the S.E.A. Aquarium via Klook and local travel agents to save time and money.
Airport Transfers: Given our group size, I booked private 16-seater van transfers in both Vietnam and Singapore. This was a lifesaver, ensuring a stress-free transition from the airport to the hotel with all our luggage.
3. Our 4-Day Itinerary
Singapore requires a lot of walking, which was a new experience for the kids. However, they quickly adapted and loved experiencing the "firsts"—their first MRT ride, their first double-decker bus, and trying new foods.
- Day 1: Arrive at Changi Airport. Clear immigration and visit the Jewel Changi waterfall. Check into the hotel, explore Clarke Quay, and have dinner in Chinatown.
- Day 2: Morning at Sentosa Island to visit the S.E.A. Aquarium and take photos at the Universal Studios globe. Afternoon swimming at the hotel. Evening at Gardens by the Bay for the free light show and a riverside stroll.
- Day 3: Explore the Flower Dome and Cloud Forest. Lunch at Marina Bay Sands. Visit the ArtScience Museum, Helix Bridge, and Merlion Park. Evening souvenir shopping at Chinatown Point.
- Day 4: Early check-out and return to Changi Airport. We spent our final hours enjoying the attractions at Jewel before our 12:30 PM flight back home.
4. Important Tips for Families
- ICA Arrival Card: You must submit your digital arrival card within 3 days before arriving in Singapore. You can do this on the official ICA website or via the MyICA app. Group submissions are available for families.
- Footwear is Key: You will walk significantly more than usual. Ensure everyone wears comfortable sneakers or ergonomic sandals like Crocs.
- Currency: Singapore is very card-friendly. I exchanged 500 SGD in cash but hardly used it. I used my Visa/Mastercard for almost everything, from shopping to topping up EZ-Link cards.
- Power Adapters: Singapore uses Type G (three-pin) plugs. Many modern hotels like Studio M have universal sockets, but it's always safe to carry a small travel adapter.
Singapore remains a top-tier destination for families. It balances urban efficiency with world-class entertainment, making it a stress-free and memorable experience for parents and children alike.
