Ho Chi Minh City Debuts Massive New $55 Million Multi-Purpose Circus Theater
Ho Chi Minh City has officially unveiled the Phu Tho Circus and Multi-purpose Performance Center, a state-of-the-art venue worth nearly 1,400 billion VND (approximately $55 million). This landmark project has opened its doors to the public for the first time, offering a glimpse into a modern artistic space designed for world-class performances and large-scale international events.
To celebrate its opening, the center is hosting exclusive public tours from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM on April 18–19 and May 16–17. Visitors have the unique opportunity to explore the architectural grandeur, high-tech stage systems, and cutting-edge sound and lighting equipment, while also witnessing professional artists during their intensive rehearsal sessions.
Architectural Innovation and Versatile Design
The facility is a masterpiece of modern engineering, featuring a main stage designed without columns to ensure unobstructed panoramic views for every seat in the house. The technical highlight is a 12-level multi-stage system, allowing for incredible flexibility in production design, from traditional circus acts to complex theatrical spectacles.
- Daily Capacity: Welcoming 300 to 500 visitors during the opening phase.
- Performances: A 45-minute showcase featuring circus training, puppetry, and high-energy acts like roller skating, juggling, and acrobatic balance.
- Artistic Highlights: Excerpts from "Memories of the Fire God – The Mysterious Land" and traditional water puppetry, including the "Loan Phuong" performance.
A Fusion of Tradition and Modern Spectacle
The center aims to be more than just a circus; it is a cultural hub where traditional Vietnamese arts meet modern technology. Visitors can experience the "Swan Lake" hand puppetry and interact with performers at the specialized water stage.
Local resident Lam Thi Bich Tram, who visited with her daughter, expressed her amazement: "I was completely overwhelmed by the scale of the theater. The moment the two-tier stage lowered and the water rose for the performance was incredible. I never imagined a circus stage in our city could achieve such technical sophistication."
A Future Landmark for Global Tourism
According to Mr. Nguyen Phi Son, Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Performing Arts Center, the venue is designed as a multi-functional theater capable of hosting music concerts and various performing arts alongside circus acts.
Looking ahead to the upcoming holidays on April 30 and May 1, the theater plans to offer free admission for selected circus highlights. The long-term vision is to develop signature shows that reflect the cultural identity of Ho Chi Minh City, positioning the Phu Tho Center as a must-visit destination for both domestic and international travel tours.
This new architectural gem is set to revitalize the city's entertainment scene, offering travelers a fresh and exciting way to experience the vibrant spirit of Saigon.
