China Travel Review: Exploring Jianshui and Mengzi with a Baby
Who says having a toddler means you have to stay at home? Our family recently completed a seamless 3-day, 3-night tour of Jianshui and Mengzi. For all the parents out there who are still hesitant to travel with little ones, here is my "secret guide" and review of this incredible journey!
Entry Procedures: Effortless and Quick
Many parents worry about the paperwork involved in crossing the border, but the process was surprisingly straightforward:
- For Adults: Our tour guide handled everything from A to Z. All we had to do was pack our bags and enjoy the ride.
- For the Baby (11 months old): We simply provided a photo for the entry/exit declaration form and had it stamped at the local police station. The entire process took about 5 minutes—much simpler than we had imagined!
The Experience: Tiring but Truly Rewarding
Traveling with a "little boss," along with a mountain of diapers and baby gear, is certainly exhausting. However, the experience was absolutely worth it. The highlight of our trip was our exceptional tour guide, who acted as a lifesaver. He stepped in as a "nanny" to hold the baby while we ate, served as a professional photographer to capture our best moments, and even helped carry our luggage throughout the journey. Exceptional service!
Culinary Delights: The Giant Bowl of Noodles
Chinese cuisine is generally very palatable, but the undisputed star of the trip was the Crossing-the-Bridge Noodles in Mengzi:
- The broth was rich, clear, and authentic.
- The variety of toppings was impressive, and the serving bowl was massive—nearly five times the size of a standard bowl! It was a sight to behold, and so delicious that we finished every bit.
Exceptional Support: Feeling Like Family
A huge thank you to the entire support team. Everyone was incredibly friendly and went out of their way to assist our group. It felt less like a standard tour and more like traveling with family members who truly care about your experience.
Pro-Tips for Traveling Moms
If you are planning a similar trip, here are a few takeaways to ensure a smooth journey:
- Be Bold: Don't be afraid to take your little ones on an adventure. It is nowhere near as daunting as it seems!
- The "Just-in-Case" Medical Kit: I packed a full kit including fever medicine, digestive aids, and mosquito repellent. Fortunately, we didn't need any of it, but it is always better to be over-prepared than under-prepared.
- The Essential Item: If you are traveling with a child under 2 years old, a compact foldable stroller is an absolute necessity. It is the ultimate tool for conserving your energy and avoiding fatigue during long walks through the Ancient Towns and scenic spots.
