❄️ Real review: High-speed train from Suzhou to Shanghai only 30 minutes (Experience in December 2025)
If you're wondering how long it takes to go by high-speed train in China from Suzhou to Shanghai, the short answer is: you arrive before you can do anything 😄
My trip was in mid-December, the weather in the Jiangnan region was cold below 5°C. And below is the "eye-witnessed and ear-heard" experience when taking the G-train in China for the first time on this route over 100km.
🚉 Procedures at Suzhou Station – Passport is enough
Suzhou Station is quite large, with architecture blending modern and classical Chinese elements.
Check-in for China's high-speed train:
International passengers cannot use the ID card scanning gates like locals.
👉 Just find the Manual Lane (lane with staff), show your passport, they scan it "beep" in a few seconds and done.
Security check:
Strict like at the airport (scanning luggage, metals…).
👉 Tip is to arrive at the station 30 minutes – 1 hour early to avoid rushing.
🚄 Boarding the high-speed train – Warm, smooth and very modern
As soon as you step into the carriage, the first feeling is… much warmer after walking in the cold outside.
Speed:
The electronic display shows 350 km/h, but the train runs smoothly.
I placed my phone to record timelapse on the foldable table without shaking – quite impressive.
Seating:
Took Second Class (2nd class) but:
Wide legroom
Comfortably reclining seats
👉 Personally, I find it more comfortable than airplane seats for short trips.
🔌 Amenities on China's high-speed train – Even more "worth it" in winter
This is my favorite part of the trip:
Power outlets:
Right under the seat with both 2-pin & 3-pin sockets.
For those who take photos and videos all day like me, it's truly a "lifesaver".
Restroom (WC):
Very clean
Green / Red indicator lights outside the door
Separate handwashing area, warm water – extremely comfortable in cold weather.
Food and drinks on the train:
Hot water dispenser at 100°C for free at the front of the carriage
Chinese people often bring cup noodles, tea flasks
Food cart selling: hot boxed meals, fruits, milk tea
💰 Prices around 40–60 RMB, convenient and not overpriced.
📍 Arriving at Hongqiao Station – Super convenient connections
Before I could finish my snack bag, the announcement said we've arrived at Shanghai Hongqiao Station.
The station is very large, but:
Clear signage
Direct connection to Shanghai Metro
👉 Follow the green signs to go down to the subway to the city center
👉 Or follow Taxi / Parking signs if taking a car.

🌆 Recommended time: Trips around 4h – 4h30 pm

Stations are very large, lots of walking → comfortable shoes & warm clothing are top priority
🎫 Suitable for whom:
