Kotor, Montenegro: Ancient Charm, Stunning Views, and Lots of Cats

"Tell about the cities I've been to!"
🥰 Episode 2: Going to the place with wind in Montenegro – Kotor

Has anyone seen the movie Go to the Place with Wind starring Liu Yifei and Li Xian? Kotor gives me exactly that feeling.

One morning waking up, stretching to welcome the sunshine, brewing a cup of coffee — in front of me is the blue sea, high mountains, fresh air filling the lungs. Stepping out onto the small road, sunlight sparkling like diamonds on the sea surface, cool wind blowing — suddenly feeling the heart calm down immediately.

Not only beautiful in a "chill chill" way, Kotor also has more than 2,000 years of history and has been recognized by UNESCO twice.

What I really like is that Kotor is no less beautiful than Dubrovnik or Malta, but because it's not too famous, it still keeps a somewhat empty feeling — thanks to that, I can enjoy this city more.

Climbing up the fortress and looking down at Kotor Bay, I understand why the ancients chose this place to build the city: mountains embrace the entire city, the sea lies neatly below — both beautiful and super defensive.

Oh, to go up to San Giovanni fortress, you have to climb more than 1,350 steps 😅

Kotor is also famous for… cats 🐱
Cats have lived here since the Middle Ages, once helped protect the city from the plague, and now have become a symbol — there's even a cat museum.

Spotlessly clean
Local people to this day still maintain the tradition of washing the cobblestone streets with soap, so the Old Town is always clean and shiny.

Summer in Kotor is quite hot, but in return, swimming in the sea is extremely satisfying. Because it's a bay, surrounded by mountains blocking the waves, the water is calm, crystal clear, not deep — very suitable for those who aren't good at swimming like me because it still feels very safe.

📍 Small tip:
Staying about 1–2km from Old Town is a very good choice — walking along the seaside is beautiful, quieter, and prices are more affordable. My old homestay was just a few steps from the sea, surrounded by green trees, very nice to stay in 🌿
