Pickpocketed in Milan: My Hilarious Close Call!
I've heard all the warnings about pickpockets in Italy, and after 16 years in Europe, I finally got a taste of their slick skills right in Milan.
The Shocking Metro Moment at Milan Central
I'd just stepped onto the metro at Milan Central Station when a girl about 20 years old pointed at the route map and started chattering away. Out of reflex, I looked up. She kept babbling and then slipped out just as the doors closed. In a flash, something flew under my feet. I glanced down—my money pouch! My crossbody bag had been unzipped in every compartment, even the inner one with my passport. Luckily, they didn't take it. I grabbed the pouch and checked: they'd only snatched the cash, leaving all my cards intact.
Who Knew? Even "Poor-Looking" Travelers Get Hit
I'd always felt safe with my scruffy, budget-traveler vibe—no one ever bothered me before. But nope, these pros don't discriminate; they snag whoever they can. Good thing I skip fancy wallets—no leather luxury here, just a cheap fabric pouch with coins. Maybe they took pity on my broke look and tossed it back... but a stylish leather one? Probably gone for good.
Luckily, a Lucky Break in Disguise
In the midst of the bad luck, there was a silver lining. They only got 5€—that's all the cash I had on me! 😂 Back at my place, I told my host the story. Feeling bad for me, he waived my 14€ city tax. So, I actually came out ahead by 9€! 😂😂
Lessons for All Travelers: Stay Vigilant!
Online forums always have folks from Europe saying Vietnamese tourists get targeted for flashy clothes and designer gear—just dress poor and blend in. I can confirm: no one rocks a "poor" look like me, yet I still got pickpocketed. Bottom line: caution first. If someone's yapping nonsense, clutch your bag and phone tight!
