Ho Chi Minh City Metro Line 1 to Offer Free Rides for Three Days
Ho Chi Minh City is planning to offer complimentary rides on Metro Line 1 for three significant days: January 1, 2026 (New Year's Day), and February 16 and 17, 2026 (Lunar New Year, specifically the 29th day of the twelfth lunar month and the first day of the first lunar month).
The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction has submitted a proposal to the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City. The proposal seeks approval for the operational cost support to facilitate free travel for residents on Metro Line 1, which runs from Ben Thanh to Suoi Tien, during these two major upcoming holidays.
Hoa Sen Trading and Advertising Joint Stock Company has generously sponsored the funds necessary for the Urban Railway Company No. 1 Limited (HURC1) to provide free travel for passengers on these three special days.
This company has recently reiterated its proposal to finance the free metro rides for citizens during the 2026 New Year's Day and Lunar New Year celebrations. Furthermore, they have expressed an interest in participating in decorating the trains and engaging in political advocacy alongside advertising on board.
Following a consensus among relevant departments and agencies, the Department of Construction is recommending that the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City permit HURC1 to collaborate with Hoa Sen Company in implementing the free metro ticket program on January 1, 2026 (New Year's Day), and on February 16 and 17, 2026 (Lunar New Year, corresponding to December 29 and January 1 in the lunar calendar).
