Your Guide to Europe's New Entry/Exit System (EES)
Exciting news for travelers heading to Europe! Starting October 12, 2025, a brand-new system is set to transform how we enter and exit the continent.
What is the EES System?
The Entry/Exit System, or EES for short, is the European Union's innovative approach to border control. This system is specifically designed for citizens from outside the EU, EEA, and Switzerland who are traveling to Schengen Area countries for short stays – think tourist trips, business ventures, or even just passing through.
This significant change will affect a vast swathe of Europe, including popular destinations like Spain, France, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Greece, and many more. If you're planning an upcoming European adventure, understanding the EES is a must.
Key Changes to Expect:
- Say goodbye to traditional passport stamps! Your entries and exits will now be recorded using advanced biometric data, including fingerprints and facial recognition.
- Experience smoother and faster border crossings.
- Benefit from enhanced security measures, helping to combat visa fraud and misuse.
- Your travel itinerary, including dates of entry, exit, and duration of stay, will be stored digitally.
How Does it Work?
On your first entry, you'll provide your fingerprints and have your photograph taken. From then on, each time you cross a border, the system will automatically recognize you and log your arrival and departure times.
What About Your Vietnamese Passport?
Here's what you need to know about using your Vietnamese passport with the EES:
- Yes, if you have a chipped Vietnamese passport. These are the passports with a small gold chip symbol on the front, containing your personal information and biometric data like your face and fingerprints.
- No, if you have a standard passport. If your passport doesn't have a chip or biometric features, you'll need to queue at a border control counter with an officer. They will manually input your data into the EES, which involves taking your fingerprints and photograph on the spot. This process will take considerably longer than using a biometric passport.
As you gear up for your European getaway, take some time to familiarize yourself with the EES. Share this vital information with friends and family so everyone can travel with confidence and avoid any unwelcome surprises.
Wishing you all a fantastic and seamless holiday in Europe!
