UK Students' Reading Week: A Quick & Easy Turkey Adventure (and Tips!)

UK Students Embark on a Turkish Adventure During Reading Week

Discover how UK-based students seized their reading week break for an unforgettable journey to Turkey. This whirlwind trip, packed with iconic sights and thrilling experiences, proved to be the perfect escape.

From Study Break to Turkish Explorer

With just a week off, a spontaneous decision was made with a close friend: Turkey! The ease of obtaining an electronic visa, which took a mere ten minutes, and its relatively short distance from the UK made it an attractive choice. The recent news of security concerns in Turkey prompted a sensible choice – joining a local tour group. This provided a valuable sense of security and meant all the itinerary planning was handled, allowing for a truly relaxing holiday.

Five Days, Two Cities, Countless Memories

Our week-long reading week translated into a focused five-day exploration of two captivating Turkish destinations: Istanbul and Cappadocia. We hit the quintessential landmarks, including the majestic Blue Mosque, the awe-inspiring Hagia Sophia, the mysterious Basilica Cistern, and the charming town of Göreme. Our adventures also included a scenic Bosphorus cruise, a breathtaking hot air balloon ride over Cappadocia, and a ride in a vintage car, a popular photo opportunity. Looking back, this five-day itinerary felt perfectly balanced and incredibly rewarding.

Insider Tips for Your Turkish Travels

  • When visiting the Blue Mosque, female visitors are required to wear a headscarf and avoid shorts and short sleeves.
  • Students, be sure to bring your ID! Many attractions offer significant discounts on admission fees.
  • Avoid exchanging currency at the airport; rates are considerably higher. It's best to find an exchange office in the city center.
  • For that unforgettable hot air balloon experience, booking in advance is highly recommended. Always check the weather forecast.
  • Be vigilant about menus that may have varying prices for tourists and locals.
  • Pack an extra warm layer. Cappadocia experiences significant temperature drops in the early mornings and evenings, especially when watching the sunrise hot air balloons.

A Smooth Sailing Tour Experience

Our group tour experience was overwhelmingly positive, with no significant dissatisfactions. The seven-seater vehicle was exceptionally comfortable, offering ample space to recline, and our driver's steady hand made even my usual car sickness vanish. The hotels were of a good standard and impeccably clean, including a night spent in a unique cave hotel. At each attraction, our guide provided insightful commentary before allowing us ample free time for exploration and capturing those perfect photos. It offered a fantastic blend of guided discovery and personal freedom.

If you're still pondering your reading week travel plans, Turkey is an absolutely brilliant option and comes highly recommended!
