It's nearly been a year since this incredible trip, but with recent news about Turkey expanding its e-visa system, I felt inspired to share some practical tips for those planning a visit now or in the future. This is an experience I highly recommend, offering breathtaking views and unique cultural insights.
Getting to the Land of Fairy Chimneys
For my journey, I flew with Turkish Airlines to Istanbul. Since the trip wasn't originally planned, I ended up booking my ticket quite close to the departure date, which made the fare a bit steep at around 28 million Vietnamese Dong. However, having existing US and UK visas made the e-visa application process for Turkish Airlines remarkably smooth and swift.
After spending three days exploring Istanbul, I hopped on another Turkish Airlines flight from Istanbul to Kayseri Airport. This domestic flight was quite affordable, costing a little over 2 million Vietnamese Dong for a round trip.
Kayseri vs. Nevsehir: Choosing Your Cappadocia Gateway
Cappadocia is served by two airports: Kayseri and Nevsehir. While Kayseri is a bit further from the main tourist areas, it generally offers more flight options, making it a convenient choice for many travelers.
Seamless Transfers to Goreme
Upon arrival at the airport, you have a couple of excellent options to reach Goreme, the vibrant heart of Cappadocia. You can pre-book a private van transfer, which offers convenience and comfort. Alternatively, you can head straight to the shuttle bus area just outside the arrivals hall. The shuttle bus is a popular and cost-effective choice, costing around 10 Euros and taking approximately an hour to reach Goreme. I strongly advise booking your transfer in advance and providing your flight details to the service provider. Kayseri Airport isn't massive, so finding your pre-arranged pick-up or the designated shuttle area is quite straightforward.
Where to Stay: Embracing the Cave Experience
When it comes to accommodation in Cappadocia, I wholeheartedly recommend basing yourself in the town of Goreme. It's the central hub, buzzing with a fantastic array of restaurants, lively bars, and tour operators, making it incredibly convenient for exploring the region.
During my stay, I opted for a mix of experiences. One night was spent in a comfortable hostel, and for my second night, I indulged in a stay at Mirtha Cave. I booked this quite last minute during peak season, so the price was higher, around 7 million Vietnamese Dong for the night. However, it was an investment I never regretted. The views from this hotel are simply spectacular, featuring a beautiful terrace perfect for sipping tea while watching the balloons, and a restaurant offering panoramic vistas of the entire hot air balloon spectacle. The most captivating aspect, though, is that all the rooms are uniquely designed with authentic cave architecture, offering a truly immersive experience. The staff were incredibly friendly and provided exceptional service.
For another excellent option, I'd also suggest Sultan Cave Hotel. The beauty of choosing a hotel with a great view is that even if you decide to save money and skip the balloon flight itself, you can still witness the magical spectacle of hundreds of balloons drifting across the sky right from your accommodation.
The Thrill of Hot Air Ballooning
When it comes to booking your hot air balloon flight, you'll find numerous tour operators in Goreme offering a range of prices. I highly recommend taking a stroll through the town to compare options and get a feel for what's available. I booked my flight the afternoon before, which was a bit close to the wire, and it cost 200 Euros. The flight itself lasts between 45 to 60 minutes.
Tour operators typically offer various departure times, usually between 5 AM and 8 AM. Personally, I opted for the 6 AM slot to witness the sunrise from above. The tour includes a pick-up from your hotel around 4:45 AM, followed by a transfer to the assembly point. You'll receive a light breakfast, such as pastries and juice, before your ascent. After landing, a champagne toast and a personalized flight certificate mark the end of this unforgettable journey.
Essential Tips for Booking Your Balloon Adventure
It's crucial to book your balloon tour well in advance. This ensures you have more control over your preferred flight time and availability. Keep in mind that hot air balloons can only fly on approximately 200 days out of the year, primarily due to weather conditions and other unforeseen factors. Flexibility is key!
A Taste of Cappadocia: Culinary Delights
Cappadocia offers a diverse culinary scene, with many establishments serving delicious Turkish and European dishes. For those craving Asian flavors, I highly recommend Peking Chinese Restaurant, where I enjoyed two meals in a row! Another fantastic spot offering a blend of Chinese and Thai cuisine, with a definite Asian flair, is Quick China Restaurant. While most dishes were delightful, a few presented unique flavor profiles that might not suit every palate.
While my primary focus here is on the hot air ballooning experience, which is an investment that is absolutely worth every penny, Cappadocia offers many other exciting activities. You can embark on photo tours, enjoy exhilarating jeep safaris, go horseback riding, try a quad bike adventure, or immerse yourself in a traditional Turkish bath.
