Social Resort Penang: Affordable Stay with Beautiful Rooms, But Service Could Improve

A Refreshing Penang Escape: Our Stay at a Newly Refurbished Resort

We recently checked into a newly refurbished hotel nestled in Tanjung Bungah, Penang, perfectly positioned for our journey to Batu Ferringhi. The location is undeniably convenient, offering easy access to local eateries and boasting a large Uniqlo outlet nearby.

Our Stay Details

We stayed from July 26th to 27th, 2025. We snagged a great deal on Agoda, with the price coming in under RM300, around RM270 for our dates. We booked through a contact, so the exact price isn't something we have on hand. We opted out of breakfast, but the add-on price was approximately RM35 per person.

The Room: Social Cosy King (32m²)

Check-in Experience

⭐⭐⭐

We arrived at 1:30 PM, but our room wasn't quite ready. A follow-up at 2:40 PM still showed no availability. We'd hoped for an early check-in, noticing other guests were already settled, though we assumed their rooms were ready sooner. Our room finally became available at 3:00 PM.

Lobby Ambiance

⭐⭐⭐⭐

The lobby design is stunning, exuding a modern and chic vibe. With ample comfortable seating, waiting was a pleasant experience, and we encountered no issues during our hour-and-a-half wait.

Room Interior, Cleanliness, and Amenities

⭐⭐⭐

  • Pros: The room itself was beautiful, spacious, and very cosy, complete with a balcony. The air conditioning was wonderfully cool, and the large smart TV offered convenient control via a smart remote for things like ordering room service or requesting towels. Everything felt new, and we particularly appreciated the plush bathrobes and the charming laundry bag. Even the glasses were so cute, we were tempted to buy one to take home!
  • Cons: An iron was not readily available in the room. We searched for a common ironing area but couldn't find one. It turned out we needed to request it. Our first request took 30 minutes, and a follow-up call was necessary as we were about to check out – we were informed they were quite busy.

View from the Room

⭐⭐⭐

Our room did not offer a sea view. For those seeking ocean vistas, opting for a sea-view room is recommended.

Toilet: Cleanliness and Toiletries

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

While there was no bathtub, the basic amenities provided – including soap, shampoo, conditioner, and lotion – were excellent. Toothbrushes and other essentials were also included as expected. The shower featured a handheld option, and the water pressure was adequate.

Wi-Fi and Phone Signal

⭐⭐⭐⭐

We found the Wi-Fi to be fast and reliable, with excellent phone signal strength throughout our stay.

Facilities: Gym, Swimming Pool, Spa, etc.

The resort offers a gym, a swimming pool, and beach access. Unfortunately, on the day we planned to visit the pool with our children, we discovered it was closed from 5 PM to 8:30 PM for a private event. This was disappointing, especially as no one informed us during check-in, and the kids were already dressed and eager for a swim. However, we made the best of it by enjoying the beach and building sandcastles. We returned to the pool after 8:30 PM, where it was bustling with other guests. The pool area features a main pool (around 1.5m deep) and a kids' pool. What truly impressed us was the abundance of provided pool floaters – a delightful touch we hadn't encountered at other hotels!

Parking

⭐⭐⭐

Basement parking is available, but accessing the lobby requires climbing stairs, as there is no elevator. Upon arrival, we had to haul our luggage ourselves. Even after informing the staff about our room number and requesting assistance with our bags, it took multiple requests. We were eventually told that the lack of a number on our trolley contributed to the delay.

Overall Stay Experience

The room and the hotel itself are beautiful, offering an affordable escape with both a pool and beach access, making it a worthwhile experience for the price. However, we felt the service was a bit lacking, and perhaps we were just unlucky with our timing. We had considered other options like Bertam and Flamingo, but chose this hotel due to its recent refurbishment and positive reviews. If you're looking for a new place to try in Penang, this hotel is a decent choice, especially given its very reasonable pricing.
