Mexico City: Aztec History, Safety Tips, and Travel Guide

Exploring Mexico City: A City Steeped in Aztec History and Stunning Architecture

Navigating Your Mexico City Adventure

Wondering about travel requirements? Mexico is refreshingly straightforward. You won't need COVID-19 tests for entry or to upload vaccination records. A simple online health declaration is all that's required before your trip. However, upon returning to the U.S., a negative COVID-19 test taken within one day of your flight is necessary. Many hotels and resorts offer testing services, and local labs or airport testing facilities provide convenient options, with prices ranging from $25 to $150 depending on the test type and location.

Is Mexico City safe? This is a common question, and from my experience, it's remarkably so. The areas I explored, including my centrally located hotel, were teeming with police presence, even in the early hours of the morning. I felt perfectly comfortable taking late-night strolls for exercise around 2-3 AM.

A Glimpse into the City's Heart

Mexico City boasts a major international airport, making direct flights from the U.S. readily available. I flew with Volaris, a budget-friendly airline. Delving into its history reveals a fascinating fact: the city was built on a lake! The Aztecs ingeniously filled in the lake to construct their metropolis. While the lake wasn't particularly deep, perhaps around 4-5 meters, it's an incredible testament to their engineering. The city's architecture is a captivating blend of Spanish colonial style, with intricately carved gates and walls that will delight any admirer of historical design.

Getting around Mexico City is a breeze thanks to the affordable and efficient Uber service. Most tourist attractions offer free Wi-Fi, so navigating with your phone is simple. A key tip when arriving at the airport: opt for official airport taxi tickets to avoid any potential issues with unofficial rides.

Where to Stay: Historical Central

My accommodation, the aptly named Historical Central hotel, was perfectly situated in the heart of the city. The location was incredibly convenient, and the service was absolutely exceptional. They even provided complimentary breakfast and 24-hour access to food and drinks, excluding alcohol. This meant I could enjoy a meal at the hotel's restaurant anytime without needing to venture out.

Must-Do Experiences in Mexico City

The city center itself is a fantastic place to explore, offering a wealth of historical sites and ruins perfect for discovery. You'll find beautiful churches and expansive plazas right in the center. For a deeper dive into local culture, a visit to Xochimilco is highly recommended. It's akin to experiencing the waterways of Vietnam's Mekong Delta. You can book tours in advance or head there via Uber or taxi to hire your own boat. Enjoy food and drinks on board, or bring your own. Boat rentals typically cost around 500 MXN ($25) per hour, making it a delightful and economical group activity. If you enjoy shopping, the Mercado de Coyoacán is a must-visit. This sprawling market, much like Vietnam's Ben Thanh Market, offers a vibrant array of goods.

An Unforgettable Escape: Grutas de Tolantongo

Located about a 3.5 to 4-hour drive north of Mexico City, Grutas de Tolantongo offers a natural hot spring paradise. Due to the mountainous terrain and limited nearby towns, booking a tour is the most convenient way to experience this gem. Tours include a driver and guide, and you can opt for a day trip or an overnight stay. This place is simply extraordinary. Imagine pools nestled into the mountainside, waterfalls, and hot springs, all fed by natural mineral waters flowing from the mountains. It's a lesser-known spot, offering a truly unique and worthwhile adventure.
