Grab Ride Experiences in Singapore: Surcharges, Kid-Friendly Options, and Driver Attitudes

Singapore Grab Car Experiences: Navigating the City with Ease (and a Few Surprises!)

Exploring Singapore is an adventure, and for many, Grab car service is the go-to for convenient city travel. Based on recent trips, here's a rundown of what you can expect, offering insights for fellow travelers.

Understanding Ride Cancellations and Fees

When using Grab in Singapore, it's important to be aware of potential cancellation fees. If a ride is canceled, you might incur a charge of $4. This is a crucial detail to keep in mind to avoid unexpected costs.

Traveling with Children: The Kid Friendly Option

For families with young passengers, booking a 'Kid Friendly' Grab is highly recommended. Attempting to travel with a child in a standard vehicle might lead to the driver refusing the ride, prompting you to cancel and thus incurring the $4 fee. While some drivers may be understanding and proceed, it's best to be prepared. Our family of four adults and one child took around 10 Grab rides during a 5-day trip. On two occasions, drivers requested cancellations. One driver also asked for additional payment. However, the other seven rides went smoothly.

It was on our last day that we learned the reason behind this. A kind driver explained that the 'Kid Friendly' option is typically about $5 more expensive than the standard booking. This difference, he explained, is because Grab provides insurance for vehicles carrying young children, ensuring a safer journey for everyone.

Driver Etiquette and Expectations

It seems that some Grab drivers in Singapore can be a bit particular. Our experience was a mixed bag – about 50/50. Out of the 10 rides we booked, a noticeable five involved drivers who appeared somewhat unhappy or difficult. This suggests that while many drivers are professional, some may have specific expectations.

The Cost of Waiting

If a driver has to wait for you, be aware that there's a waiting fee. This charge is set at $3. Planning your pickup times efficiently can help you avoid this additional expense.
