83 Travel Mishaps in Japan: A Solo Traveler's Woes
Episode 1: The Train Station Staircase of Doom
Allow me to share my travel mishaps, hoping fellow travelers planning a solo trip to Japan can learn from my "tragedies" and avoid them! 😅
Initially, I thought Japan's train system would be super convenient. I envisioned myself gliding onto trains with my suitcase, ready to explore Tokyo effortlessly. I was so wrong…
Picture this:
You've just landed, feeling jet-lagged and overwhelmed. You're lugging a suitcase that's half your size, plus a shoulder bag and a backpack…
Google Maps directs you to take a JR train from one station to another. It seems close enough, so you feel relieved. BUT…
A Different Reality at the Station:
- No elevator in sight.
- Escalators? Nope.
- You have two hands and a mountain of luggage.
- And then there's a staircase stretching up, testing your patience and leg strength! :)))
I felt like I was "carrying the world" on my shoulders. =)))
As I climbed each step, I couldn't help but think, "Isn't Japan supposed to be incredibly modern?"
Turns out, not all smaller or older train stations in Japan have elevators. 😭
Especially stations in residential areas – prepare to carry your luggage.
Lessons Learned the Hard Way:
- Pack light! A cabin-sized suitcase is ideal.
- If you must bring a large suitcase, consider taking a taxi or choosing a hotel near a major station (which usually has elevators).
- Use apps to carefully check routes for elevator/escalator availability.
P.S. This is just the first of 83 mishaps.
I'm compiling more. If you've experienced any unexpected challenges while traveling in Japan, share your stories so we can create a helpful series! Let's make Japan more enjoyable for solo travelers. 😄
