Discovering Granada: Beyond the Alhambra
Granada, nestled in Andalusia, Spain, stands shoulder to shoulder with Seville and Malaga as a must-see city. While Seville may boast greater renown and Malaga the allure of sun-kissed beaches, Granada holds a unique charm. Many know it solely for the magnificent Alhambra, but Granada encapsulates the very essence of Southern Spain.
A Taste of Southern Spain
Imagine yourself surrounded by the vibrant culture of Tapas, enveloped in the arid heat that seems to seep from the very stones, and immersed in the stunning Moorish architecture. The Alhambra, a testament to Moorish artistry, is undoubtedly the crown jewel.
Allocate at least half a day to explore the Alhambra. Then, dedicate another day to wander through Granada's enchanting, winding streets. Finally, set aside another half-day to recover from an afternoon of tapas paired with the deceptively refreshing – yet potent – Sangria (or, for a more local experience, try a Tinto de Verano). Be warned, tourist-centric Sangria might not offer an authentic flavor!
Granada Travel Tips
- Tip 1: When I last visited the Alhambra, tickets needed to be purchased online at least 3-4 days in advance due to the high volume of visitors.
- Tip 2: Avoid Andalusia from mid-May to late June unless you enjoy scorching desert heat reaching nearly 40 degrees Celsius.
- Tip 3: Pack sunscreen – lots of it! The intense Andalusian sun, combined with limited shade (mostly orange and lemon trees) and the reflective white buildings, will give you a tan faster than a day at the beach.
As a professional photographer based in Paris, I also enjoy exploring and sometimes guide small, private tours to off-the-beaten-path locations. If you enjoy my photography and share a similar travel style, feel free to reach out!
