Science Fiction to Reality: Real-Time Translation and the Future We Live In

Doraemon's Translation Bánh Mì is Real!

Google Meet has officially launched real-time language translation during calls, making international meetings feel almost… barrier-free. While not entirely new, its integration into a platform used by hundreds of millions transforms what was once science fiction into… everyday reality.

It made me reflect: so much from comic books and sci-fi films is now part of our daily lives:

  • Video calls with people halfway around the world, all with a phone.
  • Live streaming from home – anyone can "go live on TV."
  • Ordering food from hundreds of restaurants with a few taps.
  • Driving in a foreign country without knowing the language, still reaching the destination thanks to GPS.
  • Watches tracking heart rate, speed, stress levels, and monitoring sleep…
  • Contactless payment by simply waving your phone.
  • Passing through toll booths without stopping.
  • Voice commands to turn on lights and air conditioning… from 1000km away.
  • Cashier-less supermarkets: grab your items, walk out, the system automatically charges you.
  • Delivery robots, cleaning robots, cargo robots everywhere.
  • Self-driving cars, passengers reading the newspaper or even… napping.
  • .....

The Pace of Change

Everything is changing so fast. So fast that it's almost impossible to predict what will happen in the next 5-10 years.

What "fiction" do you think will become reality next?
