Discover Phan Thiet's Unique "Sunbeam Hot Pot"

You might already know, or maybe not, but Phan Thiet boasts a distinctive and relatively old dish called "Lẩu thả mặt trời" (Sunbeam Hot Pot). For over a decade, I've enjoyed this dish at SeaHorse restaurant. Recently, I tried it at Mui Ne Xua, and let me tell you, it was absolutely delicious!

Lẩu thả is a testament to culinary creativity, ingeniously utilizing fresh, local seafood. The broth is infused with flavors from fish and other seafood, accompanied by ingredients like "goi ca mai" (raw herring salad), pork, fried egg, Vietnamese sausage, vermicelli noodles, fresh herbs, rice paper crackers, cucumber, mango, and an array of finely sliced, flavorful seasonings. This dish is commonly enjoyed in two ways: dry and with broth.

The Two Ways to Enjoy Lẩu Thả

First, you can savor it "dry". Simply combine a little of each topping – vermicelli noodles, and all the other delightful ingredients – into your bowl. Then, generously drizzle it with a delectable peanut sauce. This sauce is masterfully crafted from high-quality fish sauce, finely ground peanuts, lime, chili, sugar, salt, garlic, MSG, and warm water.

Alternatively, you can enjoy it with broth. Add all the toppings, except for the fresh herbs which are reserved for later, and ladle in the rich, flavorful sweet and sour hot pot broth. It's incredibly delicious!

More Culinary Delights at Mui Ne Xua

We also indulged in "ca loi xoi mo" (deep-fried lizardfish) which we wrapped in rice paper – so good! The fish was sweet and succulent. The sautéed mussels in butter and garlic were also a winner. We enjoyed dipping everything in premium fish sauce so much that we had to buy a few bottles of the pure, first-press sauce to take home. Rumor has it, it's even better than regular fish sauce since it's the initial extraction. I might just eat it with plain rice to save on other dishes! When you visit Mui Ne, be sure to try it.
