Hotel Stays in Hong Kong: My Personal Tips
Finding the Right Accommodation
So, I promised a real talk about Hong Kong, and today I'm sharing my hotel experiences. Let's dive into the world of accommodations!
It's often said that hotels in Hong Kong are super expensive. Well, that's partially true!
The cost reflects the convenience, services, and smaller room sizes compared to hotels in Vietnam. Remember, Hong Kong has limited space and a high population density.
Practical Advice Based on My Experience
From my five trips to Hong Kong (two personal trips and three for company conferences), I've learned that saving money on guesthouses or hostels isn't worth it, especially for women. It's better to spend a bit more for a safe and convenient hotel near the MTR and in a central area.
My Recommendations
- Traveling with family (adults and kids): Choose a hotel within 500m of an MTR station. Proximity to the Temple Street night market or Tsim Sha Tsui area on Kowloon is ideal. The Central area on Hong Kong Island can be very quiet at night.
- Traveling with a small group of friends: Splurge on a nicer hotel room that you can share. Being centrally located and near the MTR will save you significant time and energy. Avoid budget hostels with shared bathrooms, especially for women.
Hotels I've Personally Stayed In
I'm happy to share two hotels I've stayed at:
- Kowloon Harbourfront Hotel: Offers a free shuttle bus to Tsim Sha Tsui, which is very convenient. I stayed here during Tet (Lunar New Year) and it was pricier, but I was able to book a two-bedroom suite apartment, which was spacious enough to spread out all our luggage.
- Marco Polo Hong Kong Hotel: Although older, it's right on Canton Road, Hong Kong's luxury shopping street. I plan to stay here during my next trip, and a suite (with two bedrooms) costs around 10 million VND per night. I recommend booking a two-bedroom suite (or rooms with connecting doors) if you're traveling with a group of four or more. It's perfect for late-night chats after a long day of exploring, and the connecting space is a bonus!
Also, the areas around Jordan Road, Nathan Road, and Hennessy Road are very convenient due to the abundance of restaurants and markets.
