Bangkok Shopping: A Guide to Luxury, Secondhand Finds, and More
If you find yourself with free time in Bangkok, especially if you're there for work like me, exploring its diverse shopping scene can be a memorable experience. While I can't guarantee the quality of every item you might find, here's a guide to get you started. Remember to shop smart!
1. Authentic Luxury: The Bangkok Malls
For the latest trends and new arrivals from top brands, head straight to Bangkok's premier shopping malls. Think Siam Paragon, CentralWorld, and IconSiam. These are your go-to spots for authentic luxury goods if you prefer convenience and guaranteed authenticity.
Don't forget to inquire about VAT refunds!
2. Outlet Shopping in Bangkok
Looking for deals? Check out Siam Premium Outlets or Outlet Square Muangthong Thani, near the Muang Thong Thani exhibition center. Also, keep an eye out for Thailand's major sales events, typically running from June to September. You might also discover discounted items at duty-free shops if you're flying out of Suvarnabhumi Airport (SUV).
3. Real Secondhand Treasures: A Bangkok Hunt
If you're like me and enjoy the thrill of finding curated vintage and pre-owned items, consider these spots. Remember to negotiate prices and carefully inspect the items you're interested in. The charm of a good find is always worth the effort!
- Siam Square One (สยามสแควร์วัน): Conveniently located near MBK Center, Siam Square One houses numerous shops specializing in curated secondhand goods. I've had luck finding handbags and ordering watches here at reasonable prices. Remember to take your time and carefully examine each piece.
- 2nd STREET CentralWorld (2เอ็นดี สตรีท): Believe it or not, this shop is inside CentralWorld, on the 5th floor. It's a bit hidden, not even appearing on CentralWorld's LCD maps, making it a bit of a treasure hunt to find. This store is a mix of everything, with varying prices and brands. It's a great option if you don't want to travel far from Siam Square One, with an interesting selection of watches, clothing, shoes, and bags.
- JODD FAIRS Rama 9 (จ๊อด แฟร์ พระราม 9): This popular night market, known for its giant pork ribs, is also a good place to find secondhand sneakers. Prices typically range from 300k to 500k baht per pair, but be aware that sizes and conditions vary. It's a fun experience, though, offering a chance to browse unique Thai clothing and handmade goods.
- Real Collection Watches at MBK Center: Somewhere on the second floor of MBK, there is a popular store specializing in watches. It may require some exploration as I do not recall the specific location.
4. Replica Goods: A Fun Exploration
Exploring the world of replica goods can be a fun way to spend an afternoon. However, proceed with caution and avoid being scammed. Treat it as a lighthearted adventure, looking for souvenirs that commemorate your trip.
- MBK Center: Located near Siam, MBK Center is a hub for all sorts of goods, including replicas. Explore the different shops, ask about the quality, and see if they accept card payments. Before buying, research the original product to gauge the replica's accuracy and negotiate the price. Prices are often negotiable, and the inclusion of a box can affect the price.
- Pratunam Market (ตลาดประตูน้ำ): Venture inside the market for a similar experience to MBK. Bargaining is expected, and be aware that many vendors are of Indian descent, so there is a distinct aroma.
- Platinum Fashion Mall (แพลทินัม แฟชั่น มอลล์): This seven-story mall is packed with shops selling clothing and shoes. You'll find fewer watches here.
- December's: Located near Platinum Mall, on the 4th or 5th floor, you'll find a small selection of replica clothing, bags, and belts.
I'll share more of my Bangkok discoveries as I find them!
