Discovering Strasbourg: A Half-Day Adventure in Alsace
Continuing our series on this captivating city, let's explore the highlights of Strasbourg in just half a day! If time is short, you can still experience the most iconic sights of Strasbourg by exploring on foot.
A Walking Tour of Strasbourg
Starting from the Strasbourg central train station (Gare Centrale de Strasbourg), it's about a 15-minute walk to our first stop: La Petite France. This is perhaps the most famous spot for photos in Strasbourg, alongside the Cathédrale Notre Dame de Strasbourg.
Prime photo locations in La Petite France include the Ponts Couverts de Strasbourg (covered bridges), Pont du Faisan (Faisan bridge), Pont Saint-Martin (Saint-Martin bridge), and Barrage Vauban (Vauban dam), where you can climb to the top for free and capture a panoramic view of La Petite France. Beyond these main attractions, wander through the charming streets of La Petite France, exploring its hidden corners. The houses here are built in the traditional Alsace style, adorned with flowers, creating picturesque scenes. Allocate around two hours to fully appreciate La Petite France.
From La Petite France, a roughly 15-minute walk will bring you to Place Kléber, provided you aren't tempted to stop and photograph the beautiful streets along the way. This is where the giant Christmas tree is erected and decorated each holiday season. While the square itself isn't vast, it offers some excellent photo opportunities, especially during the beautifully decorated Christmas period.
Notre Dame Cathedral: A Gothic Masterpiece
Next, a short 5-minute walk from Place Kléber leads to the Cathédrale Notre Dame de Strasbourg, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This masterpiece of Gothic architecture is famous for its asymmetrical design, featuring a single, soaring 142-meter spire. Its grandeur and stunning architecture make it one of Strasbourg's most popular tourist destinations, along with La Petite France. The square surrounding the cathedral also offers many fantastic photo opportunities, so don't miss those.
Plan to spend about 1.5 to 2 hours exploring Place Kléber and the Notre Dame Cathedral.
In total, allow approximately 3.5 to 4 hours to experience the most renowned parts of this beautiful city on foot!
Hope you enjoyed these Strasbourg highlights!
