Valensole: A Lavender Dream in Provence
Nestled in the south of France, Valensole is world-renowned for its breathtaking lavender fields. Imagine a sweeping tapestry of vibrant purple blanketing the rolling hills – that's Valensole in the summer, from June to mid-August.
Discovering the Lavender Fields
There's a seemingly endless array of fields to explore, including the iconic one featuring a stone house and a heart-shaped tree with mountains in the background. A word of caution: that particular field was replanted last year and it can take 5 to 7 years for the lavender to fully mature again. Venture deeper to find the fields with larger, more established rows on slopes to capture truly stunning photos.
Tips for Photographing Lavender Fields
From my own experience, the golden hour is the best time to capture the lavender fields. As the sun begins to set, the light softens, bathing the landscape in a rich, purple hue. Sunrise can also be beautiful, but the light changes quickly, so you'll have less time to shoot. Follow the rows of lavender, shooting with or against the sun, depending on your personal preference.
