Hidden Halal Gems: A Ramadan Food Adventure in Saigon!

Hey foodies! Visiting the vibrant Halal food market in Alley 157 Duong Ba Trac? Then you NEED to check out this amazing spot!

Family Flavors: Authentic Halal Eats

This family-run gem, serving strictly takeaway, is located at 157A1/20. From the entrance of Alley 157/58, head towards the mosque and turn right. This Halal eatery, which I've recommended before for their rice dishes, transforms during Ramadan with a special menu!

  • Fried Fish Cake (Cha Ca Chien - 30k VND for 250-300g):

Seriously the BEST fish cake for the price! Soft, flavorful, and fried to perfection in clean oil. Perfect in a banh mi, stir-fried with lemongrass, or simmered in tomato sauce!

  • Beef Curry (Cari Bo - 50k VND):

This isn't your average curry! It's a fragrant beef curry with aromatic curry leaves, cooked the Halal way. The beef is melt-in-your-mouth tender, with just the right amount of tendon for a satisfying chew. Made with coconut water for natural sweetness, it's divine with bread or noodles. Bonus points if you can score some roti canai to go with it!

  • Beef Thính Soup (Canh Bo Thính - 50k VND):

For the adventurous eaters! This is a real taste of Saigon's Halal culinary heritage. It features delicious beef (like in the curry) cooked with eggplants and roasted rice powder (thính). Unique and unforgettable.

  • Singaporean-Style Laksa (Bún Laska - 30k VND):

A budget-friendly version that still packs a flavorful punch! I'm obsessed with the rich, coconut milk-based broth with its spicy, tangy, and savory notes. It might not have all the bells and whistles of a Singaporean laksa, but it's incredibly delicious.

  • Braised Liver (Cari Gan Bo - 30k VND):

Important note: this is BEEF liver. Halal cuisine doesn't include pork, which gives this dish a unique flavor profile. This is another dish that might require a few tries to truly appreciate its complexity. Enjoy it with rice and fresh veggies like cucumbers or stir-fried winged beans. So good!

This is my fourth post in a series exploring the amazing Halal food market in Alley 157/58 Duong Ba Trac, District 8, during Ramadan! Sharing the best eats! 👍

Hit the market between 3 PM and 5:30 PM for the best selection. It tends to sell out earlier on weekends. This particular shop starts serving around 12 PM. Happy eating!
