Hà Khẩu, China: Your Essential Travel Guide - Get Ready for Adventure!
Ready for an unforgettable day trip to Hà Khẩu? This guide is packed with all the essential info to make your adventure smooth and exciting!
I. Pre-Trip Prep: Your Travel Document (办理通行证)
You'll need a travel document - usually takes a few days to get it sorted. Here's the lowdown:
- Adults: Copies of both sides of your ID card + a 4x6 white background photo (or a clear selfie with a white backdrop – no glasses!).
- Kids: A certified copy of their birth certificate + a selfie with a white background. Heads up: you might also need confirmation of residency from your local police station.
- Processing Time: Expect 2-3 days for your travel permit to be issued.
II. Getting There: From Sapa or Hanoi
My recent trip kicked off from the stunning hills of Sapa!
- From Sapa: A taxi straight to the Hà Khẩu border crossing (Lao Cai city). My round trip in a 7-seater cost 1,000,000 VND.
- From Hanoi: Direct buses to Lao Cai are readily available.
Money Exchange: I got 3,650 VND for 1 RMB (Yuan). Plenty of money changers near the border – haggle for the best rate!
III. Border Crossing Hours: Time is of the Essence!
The border opens around 8:00-8:30 AM and closes at 10:00 PM (Vietnam time). Remember, China is one hour ahead, so double-check with your driver!
IV. Pro Tips: Must-Knows for a Smooth Trip
- Connectivity: 4G works inside Hà Khẩu, but signal drops further out. With WiFi, Facebook, Google, Messenger, and Instagram are blocked. Zalo works perfectly fine.
- Border Queues: The Vietnamese side is quick. The Chinese side? Brace yourself – queues can take 1-3 hours depending on the time. No phones allowed while queuing on the Chinese side, or they might confiscate them!
- Entry Procedures: Expect face scans, fingerprint scans, and baggage checks. No food allowed into China. Returning to Vietnam is super fast, no waiting!
- Getting Around: Electric scooters are available for rent right outside the gate (10 RMB/hour). Alternatively, walk or grab a taxi (taxi is best for the Light Park).
- Language: Many locals understand basic Vietnamese. Show them a picture of where you want to go, and they'll point you in the right direction. Many shops employ Vietnamese speakers.
- Light Park: The Light Park sparkles from 6:30 PM – perfect for photos right as the lights come on at sunset.
- Public Restrooms: Public restrooms are available but don't have toilet paper.
- Fireworks: You can buy super cheap fireworks to light up at the riverbank! Remember to clean up afterward.
V. Packing Essentials: Don't Leave Home Without These!
- Your National ID: Keep it safe!
- Outfit changes for amazing photos
- Sunscreen and a fan
- Power bank
VI. Foodie Adventures: Must-Try Eats in Hà Khẩu!
- Bald Uncle's Grilled Squid (Mực nướng ông đầu trọc): 2 RMB/skewer (super cheap!). We devoured 60 skewers between 6 people.
- 123smile Milk Tea: Just a few hundred meters from the border. Drinks range from 6-12 RMB. Their giant milk tea 'bucket' is only 13 RMB!
- Steamed Buns and Dumplings: Right outside the gate! The dumplings are incredible and ridiculously cheap. We got a tray of buns, a tray of dumplings, and an egg soup for just 26 RMB.
Since it was a day trip, I didn't get to try everything. Other popular options include: fried potato cubes, tofu, fried chicken, sugar cane juice, mugwort omelet, personal hot pot, etc. There's also a food fair right outside the gate.
VII. Budget Breakdown: How Much Does Hà Khẩu Cost?
- Travel document: 350,000 VND
- Round-trip Sapa - Hà Khẩu taxi: 1,000,000 VND / 6 people = 167,000 VND
- Food and drinks: 60 RMB = 210,000 VND
- Shopping + scooter rental: 80 RMB = 280,000 VND
Total: 1,007,000 VND (If you resist the urge to splurge at the supermarket like me, it can be even cheaper!)
Hope this review helps you plan an amazing trip to Hà Khẩu!
