Hong Kong Adventure: Octopus Card vs. Cash

Our family recently traveled to Hong Kong during the Lunar New Year, and we had a bit of a love-hate relationship with the Octopus card. Many places in Hong Kong don't accept Visa, JCB, or Mastercard, but almost everywhere takes China UnionPay. So, having an Octopus card felt essential!

But… Don't Fall For the Octopus Trap!

Thinking that the Octopus card is the ONLY way to get around Hong Kong is a big mistake. You absolutely don't need to buy one if you're just visiting for a short, fun trip. Instead of buying an Octopus card, just use cash. Exchange about 5 million VND into HKD in Vietnam. Bring along USD or EUR, and your Visa/Mastercard, and you'll be fine.

Where to Find the Best Exchange Rates

Looking for a great place to exchange currency? Check out the spot in the photos below! It's located in the Lady's Market area, very close to the city center. Other exchange places often have worse rates, even lower than the airport.

Cash is King (Sometimes)

Based on our experience, a family of five (two adults) needed about 500 USD in cash for 3-5 days. This covered things like buses, the MTR, ferries, snacks, and drinks. We used our credit card for everything else.

Travel Tips: MTR All the Way!

We highly recommend using the MTR. Buses can be difficult, and if you're not used to them, you might get carsick. Trams are cool for a one-time experience, but don't buy those "classic experience" tours that some travel bloggers promote. They're not worth the money because the trams are super slow.

Our family is heading back to Hong Kong in early June, this time taking my mother. If anyone is around, let's meet up for a meal!

I'll share more about the places worth visiting (and the ones you can skip) later!
