Juneyao Air Review: My Stopover Adventure in Shanghai!

Last year, I snagged a Juneyao Air flight from Europe back to Ho Chi Minh City. The price was a steal compared to other airlines during the holiday season! I couldn't find many reviews beforehand, so I was a bit apprehensive. But after the trip, I was super happy and wanted to share my experience in hopes it helps you! (This is just my personal experience from one trip: Athens-Shanghai and Shanghai-HCM).

The Awesome Stuff: Why I'd Fly Juneyao Again

  • Easy Booking: Their website is super user-friendly for booking flights.
  • Smooth Check-In: The check-in counter was quick, the staff were friendly and helpful.
  • Baggage Bonanza: Two free 23kg checked bags are included in the ticket price. Yes!
  • Seamless Transit: Luggage went straight through! This meant I could easily get a 24-hour visa in Shanghai and explore the city with just my carry-on (tons of resources online about this easy process!).
  • Free Hotel Perks! After booking, I emailed Juneyao requesting a free transit hotel. They replied within a day with hotel details, and they even arranged free airport pickup based on my arrival time. The confirmation included instructions for the pickup location.
  • VIP Treatment: At the hotel, they posted the time for the return shuttle to the airport. I missed it, but hotel staff called me a taxi and said Juneyao would cover it! Amazing!
  • Unexpected Breakfast: Arrived at the hotel around 9 PM, just as they were serving breakfast which they offered to me for free! It was basic, but perfect after a long flight – especially since there aren't many restaurants nearby. Otherwise, save your appetite for Shanghai!
  • Spacious Hotel: The 4-star hotel room was beautiful and huge! You can request twin or double beds when emailing them.
  • Shanghai Adventures: The airport/hotel is about 40-45km from Shanghai. I took a taxi for convenience and it was inexpensive. Just a heads up - they only accept Alipay. You can buy an e-sim from the airport.
  • Comfy Flights: The plane felt big and spacious with plenty of legroom, possibly more than Emirates or Qatar. Friendly staff (though not fluent in English). The plane was delayed 30 minutes due to a security check but the staff could not explain why! If your flight is delayed, email/call your shuttle driver to let them know and arrange a new pickup.
  • Decent Food: The in-flight food was on par with other airlines.
  • Freebies! They give out headphones that you can keep, plus 20 minutes of free in-flight WiFi. Super helpful for messaging my driver and getting updated shuttle info while still in the air!
  • Phone Rescue! A friend left their phone on the plane. We only realized it 6 hours later. We called the airline, and they found it! We picked it up when our plane returned. Amazing service!

The Not-So-Awesome (But Manageable) Stuff:

  • Long Layover: The Athens flight had a 16-17 hour layover in Shanghai. But this was a plus for me, as I could get the free 24-hour visa and explore! Arriving around 6-7 AM and departing late at night meant a full day in Shanghai.
  • Language Barrier: Limited English proficiency. Besides the check-in staff, most employees (flight attendants, customer service) didn't speak much English. Even when I selected the English line, it took three transfers to find someone who spoke even basic English.
